Can i achieve more bass from my Celestion S8 downwards firing and ported sub by using it on its side, so it becomes front firing and ported??!

The gut feeling is that the floor presently offers some low frequency acoustic gain to the port and driver. Which you'd lose if you let it become forward firing. You'd also lose any physical protection from kids and pets offered by the original downfiring layout.

Best proof of the pudding is in the eating. Just give it a try. But protect the new downside with carpet to avoid damage to the finish.

Not sure what you meant by "become ported"? Any plans for the Black and Decker drill Xmas present should be strongly resisted.
