Interesting. Thanks for filling in the gaps.
Seems like you pay one way or another!
It also reminded me of The Machinist, which was another unnerving film. I also agree with your theory.
As soon as Downey mentioned Sisyphus I knew that Jess was trapped in some kind of repeating time-loop where she repeats the same actions over and over without being able to break the cycle.
Good point, too, re. the cab driver being aware of the anomaly and his possible connection to Charon.
Any ideas concerning the meaning of the frequent appearance of the Seagulls?
Good film. Oh, and Jess (Melissa George) is beautiful!
Tremendous watch and I'm really glad I didn't see any trailers beforehand as they do give away some of the plot.
I think that the cab driver is some kind of grim reaper / collector of souls as has already been mentioned. He actually says, "i'm just a driver" and knows that the little boy is dead already. I think to stop the loop, she needs to let the taxi driver take her wherever she is destined to go (the afterlife) rather than keep returning to the port, not paying him and then going through the cycle again in a vain attempt to save her son.
Really, really enjoyed it.
Fantastic film though!
I thought so .... love films that make you think like that.
By any chance have you seen The Prestige?
That'll also make you think.
just watched this today and im still bemused, i agree about - the taxi driver being the grim reaper, but i don't understand how she cheated death regarding the car crash because wasn't it a case of one of her copys being in the house which spooked her causing her to leave on the journey? i just can't understand certain points of the film, im guessing that the first jess originally went mad and killed the others because the ship was just stranded and she couldn't get back to her son, i can undertand that, i don't know what happened to the crew or passengers of the liner as that wasn't explained, also was the violent jess towards her son the first jess? - end -
i enjoyed the film and it was very clever, but maybe too clever.
@stockholm, i would think the gull maybe represents some sort of watcher of the reaper or even the reaper himself if we are following that sort of path.
good film, identity i think was better though imo.
Stop thinking so much!
Definately an underrated film,I thought it was way better than the norm but the Mrs thought it was lousy and told me what was going to happen next for the most part.
Yeah, I think it's being under-rated. This should be a much bigger thread than it is.
I think there was never a crew on board - the name of the ship links into an ancient tale of a man who is forced to take a rock up to the top of a hill only for it to roll down again - this is the equivalent.
I also think that we are almost joining the story mid-way through and seeing the cycle over and over and therefore some plot holes are not revealed.
Renting this tonight. I'm intrigued by all these spoiler tags, so I'll be back here to have a read after!
I do that too. If I see that a film has generated lots of spoilers after people have watched it I feel curious about what went on to motivate people to talk about it.
Hope you enjoy it.
Thanks for that. Both ideas seem plausible.
Good shout about her perpetuating the cycle by not allowing the taxi driver to take her to the afterlife. I think that is pivotal. I believe the concept of revolt is one of the main themes of The Myth of Sisyphus. Perhaps Jess is revolting against her own death or the death of her son by refusing to allow the driver to carry her soul over to the afterlife.
It would be interesting to hear the director explain the connections between Camus' The Myth of Sisyphus and this film, as well as his elaboration on all the other mysteries the film creates.
I did enjoy it mate, really good mind bender had my mate and I totally confused. Few jumpy moments early on took me off guard too
Spoilers have now been read...
the links to Greek mythology all make sense now. I realised references being made to it when they were discussing the ships name were important, but didn't really help me as I'm not too hot on my Greek mythology! Also the taxi driver situation now adds up.
On a less confusing front...sackhead is a very menacing look, officially the new ski mask?
Have to add my name to the growing list of those who loved this excellent film - only bought the DVD today and watched it a few hours ago and found it incredibly good. Very thought provoking, nice and creepy atmosphere, very well plotted and nicely acted too. I now can't get it out of my head as it leaves you with so much to think about.
Thoroughly recommended to anyone who likes to have their head messed with and who wants to figure out the answers themselves instead of having the plot nicely wrapped up with a nice pink bow (as seems to be the case with most of Hollywood's brain dead output).
Couldn't put it better myself pal, especially the bit about the pink bow.
Thanks, although I should qualify that by saying that there are NO pink bows in the film. No sir, not one.
reminded me of scarecrow from the batman A.A. game.
Glad you enjoyed it Leumas 10. And yeah sackhead reminded me of The Scarecrow from Batman Begins and Batman Arkham Asylum.
If you like films like this you might like The Machinist with Christian Bale. It's the film in which Bale infamously became emaciated to fulfil his portrayal of the main character. It's quite disturbing.
El maquinista (2004)
Ah yes, I've seen The Machinist - very much enjoyed it (and was shocked by Bale's emaciated appearance) but overall I still prefer Triangle.
Saw this last night and really enjoyed it, I was expecting a rubbish slasher/horror film but was pleasantly surprised. As someone has previously mentioned the tone is very similar to Timecrimes (another great film that I randomly saw late at night a few months ago).
It was shown at Syfy(HD), they have recently been showing a lot of "newer" films recently, last week was pandorum.
Triangle will be repeated again several times over the next few days if anyone is interested.
terrible film. I'm just glad I didn't pay to watch it.
I really enjoyed it, as did most people here, even the critics liked it, at least you did not waste your money then, just your time.
Triangle Movie Reviews, Pictures - Rotten Tomatoes
Great film, enjoyed it a LOT. It deserves far more recognition.
don't get me wrong, I had heard positive things which is why i rented it but melissa george was awful, the other characters were annoying and the ending was pretty lame. Found myself getting bored by the time they ended up on the ship the 2nd time.
Ah well, each to his/her own. As always.
true, i suppose it's a bit of a marmite film.
I think you mean maritime......
Personally, I LIKE Marmite.
