Have to say I've been trying to guess the sort of exposure used for the grand overall winner to both expose the lightning & fire but the night sky not to be fully dark and no star trails etc

I have to say I think there's been some photoshopping going on, as much to say I reckon the lightning strike isn't what it claimed to be.

Deffo had a lot of manipulation, but that's true of most of the 'top' photographs these days. It's as much about your photoshop skills as taking the photo. Sadly my photoshop skills are pretty much nil.

I still can't decide whether that particular shot is a composite or not. It does look to me that the sky is possibly a separate image from the volcano.
