    Yes and no.

I think the cel-animation was produced as fullscreen, but it was released as a 1:85-1 widescreen print. So, while it was produced as 4:3, we originally saw in the cinema in widescreen.

The only widely available evidence of it up to recently was a copy of the trailer.

It's taken Rhino/Metrodome a year or two to track down a copy. Virtually all the distributors & the studio dumped all their copies apparently.

    Awesome.

What's interesting is that I have a Canadian release of this in clamshell VHS it is uncut with Spike swearing and also has the opening crawl done in superman style and does not have the Optimus will return speech at the end.

Howeverm the most interesting thing about this release I have is that whilst it feels the screen 4:3 there is a lot more on either side of the picture when I compared it with my old UK release yet the pic does not look anamorphic.

Inpressive breakdown by tftm. In the end it seems that there would be little point to buying this version if you already have the 4:3 release as you actually lose image. If 16:9 is so important to you a zoom would acomplish the same.... am I missing something?

    yes your missing something. ;)

'Transformers The Movie - Reconstructed' will be released on 29th August 2005. We're going back to the original picture negative and doing a brand new telecine. It will be 16:9 Widesceen Anamorphic, but will have curtains as the viewable image is 1.33:1 and 1.78:1 and it changes scene by scene. We wanted to give the fans the maximum possible Transformer image. Everything the laminators drew will be visible and this will be the first time anyone, anywhere would have seen the whole movie in its original form. It should be quite something".

So they are not going to crop it off at the top and bottom but rather, if I understand it correctly, set it back a bit so that the very edge of the picture can be seen . This way the picture will be slightly more than a 4.3 image but not a full 16:9 one. It will be a bit like some of the wide screen sports broadcasts and have the curtains at the edge of the left and right of the screen. The image will be wider than the standard 4.3 Ratio however allowing you to see , as they say, everything hat was drawn. :smashin:

    Transformeres live action news.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Genre:

    Science Fiction/Action.

    Studio:

    DreamWorks (Domestic)/Paramount Pictures (Intenational).

    Production Company:

    Unknown.

    Project Phase:

    Pre-script Stage.

    Who's In It:

    Unknown.

    Who's Making It:

John Rogers (Screenwriter); Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto (Producers); Steven Spielberg (Executive Producer); based upon the toy line created by Hasbro.

    Premise:

    Unknown.

    Release Date:

    Thanksgiving 2006.

    Comments:

Since their original launch back in 1984, Hasbro's line of Transformers toys have proven to be one of the company's most popular products. In addition to the toys, three popular animated series were broadcast: the traditionally animated TRANSFORMERS series (1984-1987); BEAST WARS: TRANSFORMERS (1996-1999); and BEAST MACHINES: TRANSFORMERS (1999-2000). A fourth series, TRANSFORMERS: ARMADAD, began airing in the summer of 2002.

In addition to these shows, there has been one previous movie done with the property: TRANSFORMERS: THE MOVIE was released to theaters in the summer of 1986.

In 2002, a new TRANSFORMERS comic book series by Dreamwave Productions debuted at the number one spot in sales, eclipsing then top-sellers like Marvel Comics' SPIDER-MAN and DC Comics' GREEN ARROW.

    Rumors:

Rumors that a live-action Transformers movie was secretly in development have been gossiped about on movie web sites for years. In actuality, all of the past rumors turned out to be false.

    Scoop Feedback:

July 5, 2002... For years it's been nothing more than a fanboy's dream: to one day see a live-action TRANSFORMERS movie unfold upon the silver screen. Well, that dream might have taken one big step towards becoming a reality...

Coming Attractions has learned that the movie rights for a TRANSFORMERS feature film have been successfully acquired. A Hasbro representative confirmed in a phone call to CA that the feature film rights for the property were no longer available. When asked, the Hasbro representative chose to not reveal which company or individual now had the rights...which leads to these all-important questions: who has them? What are they doing with them? And are they planning to make a new animated movie -- or will it be live-action?

And there the trail ends. We haven't been able to learn if the movie rights are now held by a studio, production company or just an individual. With the phenomenally successful re-launch of the TRANSFORMERS comic book property (Dreamwave Productions sold over 150,000 copies of the first issue, easily beating all order for books from major comic book publishers for that month) and a new TV series set to debut next month on Cartoon Network, the TRANSFORMERS property has suddenly experienced a renewed wave of popularity. With the toyline ready to celebrate its twentieth anniversary two years from now, the question now isn't whether someone is secretly developing a theatrical TRANSFORMERS movie out there, it's whether they're planning on making it using animation or live-action.

July 10, 2002... While we still aren't sure who had the movie rights for TRANSFORMERS, we received a tip from a reader named "Xsarien" about who had the rights just one year ago. When music video director Joseph Kahn formed his production company Supermegamedia in 2000, one of the listed projects on their website was a CGI/live-action TRANSFORMERS movie. Our scooper believed that Supermegamedia's distribution deal was with Columbia Pictures, and they were indeed correct.

However, things seem to have taken a turn for the worse for Supermegamedia. The company no longer has an active website and Kahn is now working on his first feature film, TORQUE, an action movie set in the world of motorbike racing. The last we heard, TORQUE was scheduled to begin shooting this month.

So now the question has changed slightly to: does Joesph Kahn still have the rights to TRANSFORMERS, or did it revert back to Hasbro and were the rights acquired by someone else?

[Thanks to 'Xsapien' for not being a Predacon.]

June 11, 2003... THE TRANSFORMERS have been many things: a toy line, cartoon series, comics, even a theatrical movie. But now Hasbro's robots in disguise are preparing for their greatest role yet...as a live-action movie.

Don Murphy (THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN) and Tom DeSanto (X-MEN) are the two gentlemen who have the plan and will be the film's producers. DeSanto is also in the midst of creating a story treatment for the movie, which will serve as the template for the screenplay.

It's not the first time a live-action TRANSFORMERS movie has been attempted. Three years ago director Joseph Kahn (TORQUE) and producer Chris Lee (S.W.A.T.) attempted to assemble a TRANSFORMERS movie for SuperMegaMedia, a production company, but things never got further than the initial planning stages.

Murphy and DeSanto's TRANSFORMERS idea will be shopped around to studios shortly. It's expected that a screenwriter will be hired shortly after that. [The Hollywood Reporter.]

July 19, 2004... According to one of the producers of the proposed live-action TRANSFORMERS movie, the stage is set for a new announcement to take place. At the official website for producer Don Murphy, you can click on the image of Optimus Prime and a window will open stating that a "major announcement" will take place at this year's San Diego Comic Convention. Comic-Con kicks off this coming Thursday and runs until Sunday, July 25.

Since we already know that Murphy and X-MEN executive producer Tom DeSanto are onboard and have been developing it for the past year, the announcement will likely be for where the TRANSFORMERS movie has been set up at. Rumors have swirled that DreamWorks and Sony Pictures have been vying for the property but so far no hard facts have crystalized -- yet. We may even find out that there is a director and a writer now attached to the nascent movie project.

    [Scoop submitted anonymously.]

July 23, 2004... While TRANSFORMERS producer Don Murphy said on his website that there would be a major announcement concerning his project at the San Diego Comic Convention, it turns out that the trades beat him to the punch. Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are running stories that Murphy and Tom DeSanto's live-action TRANSFORMERS film has found a shared home; both DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures will share in the development of the movie, with a summer 2006 release date eyed. The former movie studio will handle domestic distribution while the latter will take care of international markets.

DreamWorks co-founder Steven Spielberg will come on to serve as an executive producer on the project. Hasbro, the manufacturers of the toy line that serves as inspiration for the film, will remain an active participant in the development of the movie's storyline, production, marketing and related merchandising.

As yet no writer, director or acting talent have signed on. [The Hollywood Reporter, Variety.]

November 3, 2004... CATWOMAN scribe John Rogers will begin to see very large robots haunting his dreams. The writer has been selected to write the screenplay for the live-action TRANSFORMERS movie that's currently in development with DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures and that's based on the toy line by Hasbro. The film's story was first developed by X-MEN executive producer Tom DeSanto; now Rogers will sit down at the word processor and work things out into a feature length script.

Rogers executive produced and wrote the pilot for a GLOBAL FREQUENCY television series, based on the Warren Ellis comic book of the same name. The show was filmed for The WB Network but no official word has been heard whether it's been picked up for series. His other credits include THE CORE, AMERICAN OUTLAWS and he's also working on RUSH HOUR 3 and a movie adaptation of the FATAL FRAME video game for DreamWorks. [Variety.]

March 15, 2005... DreamWorks & Paramount have hired Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to write the live-action adaptation of "The Transformers." The script will be based on a story by Tom DeSanto.

Steven Spielberg will be executive producing the film which centers on two groups of robots, one led by Optimus Prime, who believes in tolerance and the sanctity of life, and the other by Megatron, who espouses survival of the fittest and the extermination of biological life.[Variety.]

May 29, 2005... From Don Murphy's message board: "Michael Bay is signed at this point for the film- BUT- he has to finish THE ISLAND and it’s not finished yet- before he can focus on TF. His Line Producer a great guy named Ian Bryce is dealing with department heads and other details. We were hoping to have a script last week but we don’t. But we will soon. Voice actors and Arcee and other things will be addressed at the right time. Welcome to the hell that is Producing- things move VERY slowly in my world. And yes, it is frustrating to me."

The only cut I am aware of is the use of one swear word "S**T" which can be heard in the usa region 1 version.
If thats all that is missing then I dintthink it matters to much.

In fact after a quick look over at amazon.com. It does not even look like there is a region 1 release anytime soon.

The only version I know of with the "aww s*it what are we gonna do now?!?" left intact is the Maverick R2 version which had a PG rating. All other versions use the Rhino transfer without it. I could be wrong though.

Some of you may be interested in looking at www.transformersdvd.com again. There is a new download section which you can register for and see work-in-progress samples of the new transfers.

In fact if you checkHERE a comparison of the DVDs from different regions shows what features some of the discs have that others dont. :)

Pre-ordered it from play.com. Hopefully it'll be sitting in the mailbox on Monday morning.
