As a lifelong Transformers fan I have to upgrade my DVD player to HD to go with my HD projector the PTAE900 in time for October for the films release on HD DVD, anyone recommend a good HD DVD player to pair up with my projector, under £200 if possible.

For under £200 you have 2 options at the moment.

Either the Toshiba E1 - available online from £179-£200ish

Or the Xbox addon - around £100 but needs the xbox obviously.

That's pretty much all there will be around by oct 16th.

The Toshiba E1 would seem the logical choice given your budget - shop around and you can get it for under £200. Furthermore Toshiba have announced a 5 disc giveaway when you buy one of their HD DVD players so you may well be able to get Transformers free.

If I remember correctly the PTAE900 is compatible with a 1080p/24 signal which means that if you can feed it a 1080p/24 signal, HD-DVD's will playback without 3:2 judder. Not sure if you are aware what this is, if not do a quich search in this forum, the subject does get discussed at length.

My suggestion is that given the combined cost of what you paid for your projector and what you will be spending on an HD-DVD player, I would suggest waiting around a month or so (Transformers not out until 16 October) and probably buying the new HD-EP30 which will output 1080p/24 (the HD-E1 won't). It probably won't cost you much more, I'll explain why:

I believe I have seen that the RRP will be £270, so I bet you will be able to get it for about £250. Plus, Toshiba will be running a 5 free HD-DVD giveaway with the new Generation 3 players and so if you figure that each film is worth about £15 (typical online price) you are effectively getting a brand new model player with 1080p/24 output for about £175!!

Seriously, don't rush and buy the HD-E1 now, smooth playback is worth waiting a few weeks for.

Is the EP30 really going to be that cheap? Impressive.

Stuart is absolutely right though - if you are willing to stretch the budget a wee bit (which given the 5 discs promotion isn't so hard) the EP30 would be the player of choice - I had no idea it was arriving so cheap.

I can't seem to find where I saw this price, I think it was on AVSFORUM a few days ago. It makes sense as they aren't releasing the E1 replacement in the UK so this will be the new entry level player, and the E1 & the EP10 are currently £250 & £350 RRP (but much less online).

Tesco online also mistakenly had the EP30 listed as for sale for a few days at £250.

Won't you have already seen it in the highest definition in the cinema?

Yes, but if one had a format for showing 2160p and True Colour at home, one could still un-focus it a little, muffle the speakers to make them sound more P.A. at 20 yards rather than Hi-Fi close-up, and have some chavs come round and talk on their mobiles for the duration.

Is the 5 free discs going to be a UK promotion, as, the last i saw, it was going to be USA only?

Can't remember where i read it, but i think Toshiba will may also be throwing in a couple of free films (300 and Bourne Identity) with some models inside the actual box with the player AND give away 5 free discs which you have to send off for.

If anything, it will happen near christmas i suppose. Just a heads up for anyone looking to hd dvd and Toshiba.

BTW Transformers has for me the best soundtrack i heard all year. Can't wait to see/hear it at home.

The 5 free discs is confirmed for USA & Europe, but so far the 2 extra movies is only confirmed for USA. Hopefully it comes here too but I'm not too hopeful.

it does. If I connect my PS3 and play a bluray movie it reports 1080p/24.

However I'm not certain it actually plays it back at a multiple of 24, or just at 60Hz. If the latter then its fairly pointless IMO.

BTW, shouldn't this be in the HDDVD forum?
