There is a program called Music Rescue that will do this. I've yet to find anything free that does it, though.

The alternative is to connect the iPod in drive mode, and drag the Music folder from it to your PC hard drive. You then need to reorganise the contents of that folder, so if you have a good MP3 management program, you get it to rename all the files and put them in an appropriate directory structure.

I have done this a couple of times manually - it can be done without software.

Basically, copy the music files from the ipod to a temporary folders on your pc. I seem to remember that they are stored in folders on the ipod and you need to copy those foldersthem to the temp folder you have created.

Then, open itunes and inturn, each of the the folders you have copied. (both windows need to be visible.

Select all the files in the folder and drag them to itunes and itunes will sort them into the appropriate places.

I'll have another look and see if i can make this clearer.

    Use Winamp!
it's free, and the plugin is now built into it... even works with the ipod touch.

all you do is go to media playlist, select ipod... right click on the artists/albums and transfer to PC

    job done.

i followed the apple guide to transferring my tunes (inc. 'purchased tracks') to a new mac and all went well apart from the purchased tunes - everything transferred to the mac ok but when i then try and update my nano it says 'not authorized to play them on this computer'. Is there a way around this?

    Hello

    I just purchsed a 3rd Gen Nano.

I downloaded the new version of itunes 2 days ago and I have lost all the CDs that I had in the library. I have tried to re-install using Winamp and from using the technique of reading from the hard drive but whilst the ipod is recognised on my PC the only contents it shows is the calendar and notes - no music files are showing on the PC.

    Can anyone help?
