Hi

Asking this question for a mate.

Is there anyway to transfer recorded programmes direct from his Sky+ box to PC/Laptop

I know you can do it via DVD recorder but this would mean added expense for him

Thanks all :smashin:

Get a tuner/tv card if it's a desktop or a USB version for a laptop. Make sure it accepts svideo or composite input and has the ability to record. Best known make is Hauppauge. Try and get one with a firmware MPEG encoder, otherwise it'll take a lot of processing power and disk space to software encode on the fly.

If the programs you want are broadcast on a FTA (Free-To-Air) channel (Not Free-To-View) i.e BBC1, BBC2 etc they are stored as an unecrypted MPEG2 TS on the hard drive and can be copied using a program called +Extract (http://www.neildoh.org/Software/Extract/extract.htm).

To do this you need to open up your sky+ box and remove the Hard Disk ( after turning the power off and unplugging :lesson: This will also void your warrenty  ), then attach the hard disk to your PC ( easiest to use one of the IDE to USB2 converters as you don't need to open up your PC to attach it ).
Then run +Extract ( Windoze XP only  ) and it scans the attached hard drives to determine which one contain SKY recordings. You can then select the programs you want and extract them to your PC. You then demux and edit them using a program like ProjectX or VideoRedo and remux them into a MPEG2 PS using 'ImagoMPEG-Muxer'. You can now watch them

Make sure it has an analogue input or analogue TV tuner as the Sky box does not output a signal that a Freeview USB tuner could use
