I am totally new to home theatre and I need advice. My setup at the moment is as following:

    Wharedale Valdus 400 floorstanders
Old JVC 160Watt Stereo Amp with 2 channels
A pair of cheap Panasonic shelf speakers
A cheap DVD player which plays MP3's

I've been looking at a Yamaha A595a second hand as my AV receiver which i would hook up to my stereo amp for my front speakers through the pre outs. I am also looking at getting a seond pair of floorstanders, second hand, as my surround speakers and using one of the cheap Panasonics as my centre speaker.

What is the general feeling about my plan...am i on a hiding to nothing considering the cheapness of the DVD player?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW budget is a little tight...

Have a look in the classifieds, to see if anythings fits your budget. What sort of TV do you have as for AV Its Quite important I wouldlook for a reciever and a centre speaker to replace/add to your JVC amp and put the pannys at the rear, I would buy a centre as thats a very important channel for DD/DTS rears are effects you might want to put a sub on your list as well. The Outputs on your DVD are also important, Optical or Coax. Have a search for things like Yamaha A595a in the search box.

My TV is an old 21" Sony Trinitron with a scart socket and nothing else other than a headphone socket.

The dvd player has 1 coaxial output but no optical one...is that a problem?

Would the Wharfdale speakers not take the role of the sub as well as front left and right?

Is the Wharfdale WH-2 centre speaker good enough for my needs. There is one for sale on ebay for 48 squids?
