Has coax digital links all but died out in favour of Toslink opticals? I am wondering what the maximum run length you can have for an optical link is? I have a setup where my hifi, DVD, cable and amp etc are at one side of the room but my tv is at the other so I need approx 10m cable runs to reach the tv. Would I be better having the DVD/Bluray under the TV and running the audio round to the hifi or keeping it all together and running long HDMI cables to the TV? I'm a bit wary about running a 10m optical link to my surround amp.

I've used 10m a few times without any problems.
Optical is preferred because occasionally earth differences across mains wiring can cause hum/earth loops.
