HDMI dvd player using a DVE disk (SD-350E)

sorry people for the delay in my settings but here they are, i am very happy with them, i created them from the dve disk, which took ages, going backwards and forwards, but here you go,
if you can see if there are any improvements to be made just let me know, thanks

i set the backlight at 80 because i found everything too dark when set low even with the brightness set high, i just went for more of an even partnership between the two.

if you find anything not quite right tell me.

still really happy with mine! faultless set!

    BACKLIGHT 80
    CONTRAST 65
    BRIGHTNESS 66
    COLOUR 46
    TINT 0
    SHARPNESS 0

    BLACK STRETCH on
    MPEG NR low
    DNR auto.
    COLOUR TEMPERATURE normal

Do these work for DTV when watching football, on mine the grass looks very artificial and cartoon looking. Although I get no blurring or movement issues just the grass looks crap.

If that's a comment based on the recent ITV matches last week -ITV1 Bolton vs someone and ITV4 Middlesboro vs someoneelse wasn't it? - then my TV picture was rubbish also. Describing the grass as cartoon like sums it up perfectly.

HOWEVER - and it is a big however - all other football I've watched has been very good, so I put it down to the transmission that night. I've watched quite a bit of footie since I got the set and that is the only time the picture was bad for me.

Is anyone prepared to post a Dummy's guide to what each component does for this dummy?
For example, I've played with Tint but I can't see it make any difference to the picture. And what's sharpness. And so on.
Is there an order in which the components should be tweaked? Or does one just dive in an change anything you fancy?
    Thanks

I have just ran DVE and got these base settings

    Backlight 39
    Contrast 42
    Brightness 56
    Colour 46
    tint 0
    sharp 0

    Blackstretch off

It seem we are all getting very different results. Bear in mind that mine was done through a fairly basic DVD player using progressive component input. I am guessing another DVD player with another input would yield different results.

I think what we need is for a HDMI dvd player using a DVE disk. That way it should be the best possible transfer of display. Also is the DVE disk really the best way of testing/setting up LCD's - I think most of the content was developed for CRT screens.

You've got similar results to those originally posted in the WLT thread. Tried those settings and the colour seemed to be very accurate and even although personally I found the image too dark for watching in anything other than a dimmed room. The above setting are similar to those I use currently which seem to be a good tradeoff for daytime viewing.

Yes it was those games 'Undecided'. I hope the world cup next year will be better.

What settings are you using for football matches, since blacklevels are not as important do I up the backlight?

Changing settings for different progs is too sophisticated for me. I just leave them as they are which is (currently)
    Backlight 60
    Contrast 80
    Brightness 40
    Colour 40
    Tint 0
    Sharpness 0
    Black ON
    Mpeg Low
    DNR Auto
    Colour Mgt Normal

These may change, for the simple reason that I am looking at this thread to see what settings others use.

With Balckstretch on , I can see the blacks get 'blacker', but what I also noticed is that details within the black can be lost.

For instance - a scene with somebody wearing a black shirt with a breast pocket in it, The black will get darker with stretch on, but I found that you may no longer see the pocket on the black shirt. SO the choice is a deeper black, or a not so deep black but get more detail.

Got the set arriving on Wednesday. Already got the Tosh 350E and new SCART cable. Is the HDMI cable that comes with the set any good?

    EDIT.
Forgot to add, is it really worth the 15 quid for the DVE disk

Is it not possible to get a reasonable result without it?

I have the DVE disk, but to be honest it wasn't really required.

Regarding HDMI cable... neither the WLT58 or 350e come with an HDMI cable.

I brought a 5m cable off eBay for about £15 and it appears to work fine.

Would I need the NTSC version of Digital Video Essentials (DVE) for NTSC calibration or would the PAL discs calibration also calibrate the NTSC picture?

    Here's mine:

Backlight: 40 (I increase this to 60 if i am watching in strong sunlight, not much chance of that happening now, and sometimes drop to 30 for watching films at night in a dark room. 40 is a good compromise for all conditions though)

    Contrast: 34
    Brightness: 50
    Colour:36
    Tint: 0
    Sharpness: 0

    Black stretch: Off
    MPEG NR: Off
    DNR: Off
    Colour Temp: Normal

I have tried some of the other settings (higher colour/contrast) and when i went back to mine the looked quite colourless so give them a chance.

    Hello,

This may seem like a bit of a daft question, but I have no shame !

How is it you get to the black stretch and MPEG NR options on the 32wlt58. I went to JL yesterday and had a bit of a play with one, but couldn't get the picture to look very clear at all.

I know the picture was never going to be great as it was from a very shared analogue signal, but the 37WLT58 had a better picture form the same feed so the only conclusion was the settings.

I tried changing the pic settings so they were the same, but the 37 was still better. The only thing i can think of is the MPEG NR was higher on the 32 but how do you change this.

Would love to get this TV as it really is a steal at the moment, but have to see it with a half decent picture before I can justify it.

    Thanks

    Sunrunner

I have 37WL56 for 2 months & have played with the picture settings a lot to try to get blacks black without losing detail in dark areas & overall brightness.
My current settings which give me the best compromise:
    BACKLIGHT 60
    CONTRAST 60
    BRIGHTNESS 40
    COLOUR 32
    TINT -20
    SHARPNESS -4
    BLACKSTRETCH ON
    COLOUR TEMP COOL
    MPEGNR OFF
    DNR LOW

CINEMA MODE doesnt seem to do anything that I can detect
I have not got any devices connected via HDMI yet, above settings work well for me with SKY+ via RGB & DVD via component.

I've been going through some of the settings here and as far as I can tell most are way off (but I must stress that these are via Freeview only). Does anybody think certain sets may have different optimisation at the production stage!?

Anyway, for the moment I'm sticking to 50 across the board (apart from colour which is 45) and will develop the picture over the next week to my optimised level so I should capture all type of programmes in all ambient light settings. I'll post final setting here later.

Yeah thats my problem too, I must say i'm not running around the room screaming"This tv is fantastic, and well worth the 1880 hard earned english pounds on!!!!" I've got a spanking samsung hd950, the picture was crap with irreversible, better with salton sea, but still not super dooper. i have a sky box going into my 37wlt58 via a £30 scart lead and i'm getting loads of colour bleeding(I think thats what its called??!) Motion is a problem aswell. Can anyone assist, its me first lcd and im not sure whether Ive overlooked something. and I'll give it a week before my wife tells me we shouldve gone on holiday with the money, so ppppllllleeeaasssee!! :lease: :lease:

Oh, my pc works a treat through me tv now, which is little comfort to be honest!

hi i hope you all have enjoyed fiddling with the settings i have just tried all the other posted settings and i have settled with the following (there seems to be quite a difference out there)

My current settings which give me the best compromise:
    BACKLIGHT 71
    CONTRAST 70
    BRIGHTNESS 53
    COLOUR 62
    TINT 0
    SHARPNESS 0
    BLACKSTRETCH off
    MPEGNR low
    DNR auto
    COLOUR TEMP warm

i find sky+ changes quality between chanels and most have slight haze criss cross patterns in the background is this just the signal quality of sky? i have checked the signal test page and it shows 75% strength 65% quality should i get them to check the signal?
the digital freeview is excellent considering a old areial in a place it says that i should not be able to receive it the pq is very good
analoge is not worth talking about
pc connected running hd film demo is unbeliveable seems even better than comets demo on a pioneer in store.
    happy fiddling

Update on my previous reply to you about 'cartoon grass'

I watched the rugby and the football on Saturday 12th Nov and, to my eyes, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the picture. No cartoon grass - in fact at times it was possible to pick out individual blades of grass. I couldn't see any motion blur either.
Some younger, keener people out there might be able to detect some flaws - our old eyes are content with what we've got and I'm certainly not going to sit and try and find 'em, even if they are there!
My wife is completely happy with the tele and, personally, I think it's the canine's genitals. It's our first LCD and we couldn't be happier.
(Please, please, pretty please, don't let me regret writing that . . . . )
