I have just bought Ian's old projector a Sim2Ht200DM. I am awaiting my screen but had a chance to have a brief look last night, had a play with progressive on region2 discs and interlaced. The set up is component cable RGB and my DVD player is a Tochiba SD900E.

I am still a little confused with progressive on PAL and whether I would benefit from a Iscan seperate box or do they know sell a Faroudja ? must be cheap and I can't afford yet. I do seem to see some jaggies, but I haven't had a real thorough set up as yet.

The blacks colour depth and detail is really excellent though !

    Thanks
    Adrian

Are you sure you're getting Progressive PAL out of the SD900 ?

All I can get out of mine is an awful "pseudo" Progressive PAL signal. (not of much use...)

Progressive on a region 1 disc looked better in terms of colour and contrast over the interlaced set up. also perhpas a little clearer, but it looked a lot less smooth and more digital with more jaggies.

Is this how you find it ?

I bought my one chipped from Leconcepts, and thsy did the chipping.

The SD900E only does NTSC PS and pseudo PAL PS. It does not do true PAL PS (which is why I diumped mine in favour of the Philips 962, streets ahead).

With PAL discs you will get jaggies and strange artefacts making R2 discs almost unwatchable for video officianados :D (well, people who like a decent pic).

Real shame as the SD900 is otherwise superb, just crap with PAL discs.

    well...

Not really crap with PAL discs.

It just doesn't output "True Progressive PAL", that's all.

Interlaced PAL is very, very good on my SD900E, though.

Sorry, meant crap if you were expecting or wanting true PAL PS. ie it's very poor compared to true PAL PS but you are right as an interlaced siganl it is very good. However, I bought it hoping it would give me excellent quality PAL PS and it doesn't.

Didn't mean to malign the player in any way.

I have just read my thread and realised I said region 1 when I was referring to its PAL performance I meant region 2 (Which I think you guys gueassed !)

I guess I am lucky in some respects as I will just shop for region1 discs as I havent got any DVD's of my own yet just borrowed discs
    :D

Where would you recommend to buy region 1 discs from ?

    Tks
    :)

If you got it from leconcepts then yes it will play RCE discs, the only caveat being that it must of had an R1 disc in beforehand.

If the last disc played was R2 then you would need to put in an R1 non RCE disc first then eject it and put in your R1 RCE disc.

At worst you will have to do a disc swap. Most likely thogh it wil play them no problem. My SD900E has the firmware which was supposed to require a disc swap for RCE titles but it plays them (e.g. Black hawk Down) no hassles without swapping.
