Toshiba SD-350E - HD, DivX - What's Upscaler

    I've bought a Toshiba DivX DVD player with HD capabilities but it keeps mentioning the word upscaler what does this mean? :confused:

    It can upscale the image and output at 720p or 1080i via the HDMI output. Whether this is truely necessary depends on whether the player can do a better job of upscaling than the LCD.

    so in basic speak it'll improve the picture quality of a convention DVD / DivX movie?

    It's debateable whether it would do more so than outputting via component. In fact it has been said that this particular model capabilities via HDMI isn't very good.

    Don't forget that your panel will upscale and display a progressive image to it's own native resolution. Upscaling DVD players are some sort of stop gap before proper HD players come out and it can be argued that a decent component player will give just as good results if not better than some of the upscaling ones.

    To answer your question though you should get a better picture from your DVD either way from using HDMI or component.
