Overall the Toshiba 46SL753 is a very capable display that can produce great images for an LCD. Whilst the 46SL753 doesn't have some of the more recent developments such as 3D compatibility and internet capabilities, it does offer reasonable value and a very impressive 2D performance and as such is certainly worth a demo.

This is 'similar' to the 3D WL768 but that has some more advanced features of course. I would say the only downside to the 768 is also the non uniform backlight on dark/black screens. It was alleviated with some tweaking but if you calibrated yours (far better than I could) then I guess the only way to mask the backlight problem is to run the set out of calibration (too dark?)

Would love you to take a look at the 3D brother of this set (which at least is wafer thin to justify the edge lit LED/non uniform thing) if any supplier can send you one.

@reviewer > Would you consider the cloudy backlight acceptable in a £1400 TV such as the wl768? ( and it's more noticable in 3D on my 768 as it auto adjusts the backlight/brightness etc). I love almost everything about the TV aside from that (And I like the remote too due to nice positive action buttons and regza link to PS3 - though it COULD do with some backlight illumination like competitors).

oh and the bezel on the 753 in this review looks jumbo sized if that's a pic of the 46"! WL768 thankfully has one piece glass no physical bezel at all (very swish) maybe similar to LG infia? but more reflections but nothing plasma doesn't have (maybe worse than plasmas with those black filters?)

There's quite a lot of interest in the 768 (comparatively as Toshiba seems to be ignored a lot around here) so a review would be great (even though it's too late for me having bought one)

The bezel is a bit wide on the 753, especially compared to many recent displays and as I mention in the review it is a bit plastic looking but conversely the screen wasn't as reflective as the displays that use a single sheet of glass.

I do think that Toshiba (and other manufacturers to be fair) need to sort out backlight uniformity as it isn't really acceptable in an expensive display but I guess people are prepared to accept it in exchange for ultra-slim displays.

I'd be very happy to review the 768 if we can get hold of one in the New Year.

Hello,
Stephen, would You like to show calibration settings, applied to reviewed tv?
I know, LCDs the same type differs from one to one, but, it could be a good start point to "upgrade" own tv :)
I mean settings for CMS and white balance controls
Great review, btw.

Hi Jancoix, if I can find my original notes I'll post some settings.

Sorry Janciox but I couldn't find the settings I used, aside from the ones that are mentioned in the review itself.

Well, painfull, but...maybe, in future reviews, AVForums people will attach their calibration settings by default? As I can see, its very popular question :)
So, Thanks for review once again, and here are my settings (calibration made by myself, not so professional as it could be. Used hardware - x-rite DTP94.)
TV SET Toshiba SL733 (I believe, it is virtually the same as SL753, in the terms of picture).
profile : cinematic
********
temperature : 2 (any other gives massive errors in grayscale)
R shift 0
G shift 0
B shift -3
R gain 7
G gain 0
B gain 0
********
Primare colours
red +3 +1 0
green -1 +1 0
blue +2 -4 0
yellow +1 +1 0
magenta 0 0 0
cyan 0 0 0
******
light 54-60 (select the best for Your light conditions yourself)
contrast 80
lum 10-20 (select the best for Your light conditions yourself)
res+/noise reduction etc etc - ALL OFF (best picture, anyway)

It's not perfect, but much, much better than default settings)

I'm finding all of these edge led efforts terrible for uneven lighting, impossible to watch - even the high end sets are terrible

it's like an awful fog clouds the picture on any dark patches - kills the viewing experience completely

I quite agree, this obsession with ultra-slim displays is ruining picture quality.
