Toshiba RDXS34 4:3 16:9 ratio problems

I have an antique but functional Toshiba RDXS34 DVD/HDD recorder that has presented a problem that has me stumped. Normally I use it to record stuff from a VCR to DVD, using the HDD as an edit facility to remove advert breaks.
But tonight I was copying stuff over from Sky+ that presented problems. The adverts and trailers were in 16:9 ratio but the main program is an old show in 4:3 ratio. Even with the ads etc snipped out, the first second or two of the show was in 16:9 before switching to 4:3. When it came time to transfer the recording to DVD the recorded said it couldn't as the content was in a mixed format.

Is there any way round this? I'd like to force the whole thing to be in 4:3 when I copy it over from Sky+ but I don't know how to do that. I downloaded the Toshiba manual but it isn't very helpful.

Kindest regards
