I don't think so... the only way I know to get a background is to have a video title on the HDD, and do "save captured images".

If the PC has video out, you could record the image on HDD that way...

with the right equipment, here is a long (messy) way to do it.

convert the bmp to a jpeg on your PC

burn the jpeg onto a CDR using your PC

get hold of a dvd player that plays Jpegs, and plug it into front inputs of TOSH, hit play and record on the 2 machines.

you know have the pic on the TOSH hard drive, so it can be used from there.

I have found another way using a program to create a video file from bmps or jpegs.

I created some high quality jpgs 800 x 600 pixels to use as as menu backgrounds for a project to be created on the Toshiba in 4:3 aspect ratio.

Download the small standalone Freeware program: Slide Show Movie Maker

    Unzip and run the SSMM.exe
    Click on; Objects/add pictures
Browse and select your jpgs and they will appear in the window.
    Click on; Select all
The default frame settings are fine but you can increase the number of "frames for showing pictures" to a higher number if you like, then click update.
    Click on; Add random fadings.
    Clear the "Picture text" box.
    Click on; Start creation.
Browse to a folder to hold the output if the default one is not to your liking.
Select the quality...I used "Final Production"
Click on; Choose Video Codec...I don't know much about this part, I just selected Huffyuv V2.1.1
And finally click on; Start creation.

A few mins later you get a .avi which you can use import into something like Nero and burn onto a rerecordable DVD as a standard DVD-video.
Play the DVD on your Toshiba and copy the complete content to HDD as Page 116 of instruction manual.
Grab the images to use as Menu backgrounds as page 129.

All in all it takes about 10 minutes.
