Toshiba MT8 (IF7200/) problem – can't power up – a relay clicking continuously

My three year old Toshiba MT8 (a perfect clone of the benchmark InFocus 7200) has developed a problem.

Usually I am keeping it disconnected from mains and powering only when needed. So now when I tried to plug it in the mains, it would not power up – I hear continuous and fast clicking of what is probably a relay (about two clicks per second) and the buttons illumination is flickering.

This looks like a power-supply problem but bore I get the scalpel out, has anyone experienced this problem with this projector? How was it resolved?

Perhaps an engineer out there can identify the problem just by the symptom – the clicking relay is a fairly good clue I think. A capacitor leak maybe?
