I am in the market for a HD DVD player because I only want to buy Region 1 discs as I will be moving back to the US in a couple of years. These forums have lead me to believe that HD DVDs are multi region.

    So....
    1) Is the XE1 (1080P) so much better that the extra cost is justified over the E1?
    2) My current display is a 42in Fujitsu plasma EDTV but will be upgrading soon to a 50in Pioneer HD Plasma (either the soon to be released 1080 or the new Kuro)
    3) Is there any disadvantage to buying an HD DVD player in the US and bringing it back in a handbag.

    Thanks

This will depend on the video processing in your display and also if your display will support 1080p/24. If your display has average video processing and accepts 1080p the XE1 should do a better job than leaving the display to work with 1080i. The XE1 will also support 1080p/24 via a FW update.

Will they allow the something of that weight and size and it being an electrical item in hand luggage ?

If I were you I'd definitely go the HD-XE1.

The Pioneer plasmas will all accept a 1080p/24 signal and scale back to the native resolution of the panel.

The XE1 will soon be updated to allow the native 1080p 24 stored on disc to be output over HDMI.

To summarise the picture is more pristine and free of artifacts as it has not undergone any interlacing/deinterlacing steps in either the player or screen.

I use this mode on my PS3 and it looks superb with no judder.

The E1 will not receive such an update.

Even at straight 1080i the EX1 is slightly better, don't know why but it is.

I would agree there, it maybe has something to do with the edge enhancement capabilities of the Reon processor.

As it stands now the XE-1 is better at handling the video judder problem caused by 3/2 pulldown and the 24fps update may cure it altogether.

    Cheers

    Why not consider the EP10?

Not as expensive as the XE1 and it *will* have the firmware update for 1080P/24

Actually right now the XE1 is much worse at handling 3/2 and they made it worse in the 2.0 firmware. I've had to revert back to my E1 because of this. I'm very much hoping the next update will fix it.

I didn't know this as I don't have this update. Can Toshiba get anything right with it's firmware updates? I got a demo of a problem disc on a few machines and the E1 was by far the worst. I can also remember an E1 owner posting on these pages that most discs he'd seen had judder. I despair at Toshiba I really do.

    Thanks for the info

Just a quick observation, but the XE1 and the E1 are no good for playing Region 1 disks with no region free hack available, you need an A2, XA2,...

Andy80 - I thought HD DVDs were region free?? Do you mean XE1 wont play normal DVDs which are Region 1? THat is fine bc I have a multi region DVD player.

Yes, that's what I meant. Didn't what you getting an E1 or an XE1 and then finding it won't play Region 1 DVDs.

Surely a most important point is that the XE1 has 5.1 analogue outs for lossless audio (unless you have HDMI audio input) whereas the E1 doesn't.
