Hi Guys,

I’ve searched a bit put don’t see any obvious posts on this topic…

As per the title:
Q) What Bit rate do you get using Optical out if you select Dolby True Hd/DD+, is it:

640kps
Or
1.5 Mbps

Just wondering if anyone knows?

(I had an XEI but got no bass via the analogue outputs & returned it, thinking of getting the HD-EP35 but wondered if the HD-EP30 had a higher bit rate when using optical output.
- I think when the original players came out the E1 outputted 1.5 Mbps
Whereas the XEI outputs @ 640kps )

Hi Kingfats,

Thanks for your reply, Oh well, just hoped it might do 1.5Mbs
- funny that the E1 did this but none of the newer models. Just wanted to get the best sound until I upgrade my AV processor to one that decodes all the DTS/Dolby HD formats…

Always a compromise:thumbsdow

Hi All,

You think it could be possible that this maybe updated with a firmware upgrade?

Its just unlikely that I will get a HDMI amp or a EP-35 anytime soon, and it seems a step back from DVD when at least some discs came with DTS!

Just a thought!

I suspected that maybe the case...was just living in hope, as some of the earlier models did offer downscale to 1.5mbps!

Just seems a shame that a supposed next generation player has actually regressed my audio potential!!

Short of a £500 amp upgrade I cant see it changing either!!

Even though the EP35 only outputs 640kbps Dolby Digital through optical compared to the 1.5mbps DTS of the E1, I have found that the EP35 sounds considerably better. I would have thought this is because the track isn't having as much processing done on it but it may be for other reasons.

Also, for the record, I find the 640kbps HD DVD sound superior to both 448kbps Dolby Digital and 768kbps DTS tracks commonly found on standard DVDs.

I think there's another thread running on this.

Either way, if you play a SD DTS, it does output DTS.

However HD- DVDs seem to be DD all the way.

I for one would like to see DTS light up on my amp with HD-DVDs, in the same way people like to see the TrueHD light appear on their Onkyo 605 with the EP35 (despite them sounding virtually the same). :D
