Toshiba HD-E1 and LPCM output

I'm very close to buying one of these but I have one thing I need to know before I do so. Does it output LPCM through HDMI? The amplifier (Sony STRDG910) I will be buying has HDMI inputs but no analogue 7.1 inputs. So I need a HD-DVD player that outputs uncompressed sound over HDMI

Thanks :)

Yes it does!
I believe all HD DVD players do.

Hi,

Does that mean that true hd audio can also be streamed via hdmi on the e1?

No, it means 5.1 LPCM can be sent out via HDMI. Legacy bitstream also works, but bitstreaming advanced audio requires both HDMI 1.3 and firmware changes as planned for the EP10 and XE1. Since HDMI 1.3 is a hardware specification, that's all she wrote!

Are any of the audio formats you mentioned better than downsampled dts via optical on the E1?

I have the sony 910 and the tosh e-1 and it works fine through hdmi, one thing i noticed that is with the 910 amp you will have to up the volume to about 55-60 when playing hddvd. The dolby digital+ and dolby true hd tracks sound fab as well.

Dimitri,

True HD ie DD HD or DTS HD etc will be a lot better than DTS. The difference is in the bandwidth ie bit rates. For example DD HD 5.1 can give 4.6 Mbps as opposed to 600kbps for DD 5.1 or even 1.5Mbps for DTS.

The sound is more crystal clear than DD or DTS over optical
So there is quite a difference ;)

Any suggestions on a HDMI capable amp?

Dimitri

P.s. how's that video calibration coming along, kostas?

The DTS via optical is only downsampled in the case of DD-TrueHD (and then only if the DD-THD bitrate is in excess of 1.5Mbps.) DD+ is either 640Kbps or 1.5Mbps and so neither rate exceeds the capacity of optical DTS (1.5Mbps.)

Bottom line is the Toslink DTS output on the HD-E1 is awfully good :)! However, HDMI 5.1 LPCM is optimal since no crosscoding is ever required and DD-THD is never player limited to 1.5Mbps. (Don't expect HDMI LPCM to destroy Toslink DTS with the same track input though -- it won't!)

Thanks for the responses, guys. I bought one and I'm really happy with it. The difference in quality over the 360 add-on is just unbelievable...I paid £180 for it from Play and I got an absolute bargain
