    Hi All

I know theres a lot of really good advice on this forum but despite reading as much as I can, I still dont know which HD DVD player to get! I just cant work out which one I need!

My plan is to buy a 40" Samsung 1080P LCD screen (next friday!) and i'd like a HD DVD player to go with it. Ive got a lot of standard dvds so i'd like it to upscale well. I'd like it to play normal Dolby Digital sound though my existing 5.1 Yamaha Amp but also be able to send Dolby True HD as i plan to upgrade the amp next (to something like a Onkyo 605). I'm really into my films so I quite fancy 24fps if possible. My budget is £250 otherwise I would just get the top of the range Toshiba. I cant decide between the E1, EP10 or EP30. Would they all fit they requirements? Would I really notice the difference between the E1 and the other in upscalling and HD DVDs. Thanks for any advice.

I would try and wait a couple of weeks and see what offers there are for The new Toshiba's, As for your choice of LCD it would be wise to make sure your purchase does do 1080/24p then at least you cover both bases for your new LCD and HD DVD purchase should we ever get a 1080/24p update.

I'm in the same boat as you, apart from the TV, mine is a Toshiba 37C3030D, I suggest the best thing to do is wait untill the EP30 is out, Keep your options open for now.

    BIG TIP!

If you're buying this from Comet or Currys, I've heard of a few people who've picked up HD DVD/BD players very cheaply when bought with an expensive TV.

    HAGGLE!

Have you thought about pushing the boat out getting a dual player?

You might have to pay £500, and wait until December but the sammy looks like it might be a good option for those not already with either format.

The E1 will downmix the HD lossless audio to 1.5 bit DTS audio via optical (2x+ better than DVD). Later if you get an amp with and HDMI in you will be able to get TrueHD over HDMI.

    Audio wise see post #10.
Video wise the E1 does not and never will do 1080/24p
    It only does 1080i max

Yep sorry missed the 1080p bit, for that you'll need a EP10 or an XE1 (when they fix the firmware)

The EP10 is essentially the E1 with 1080p added. In the US the equivelent player has been updated to 1080p/24p recently too.

Does anyone know what video outputs the EP30 & 35 will have?

I've not yet got an HDMI slot for my TH42PHD8 - do they have component out and, if so, is there anything they can't do via component (eg upscale SD DVDs?) Presumably my PHD8 will be delighted to receive a 1080p/24 signal (through HDMI when I get the board)

Also, for whoever said that Tesco wasn't the cheapest, would you care to point us to where is the cheapest ;)

All I need to do now is decide whether to go for the EP30 via optical to my DSP-E800 and live with downmixed DTS (and put the money I save towards an amp with HDMI and the ability to take the HD audio formats) or cough up for the EP35 to use the amp's bitstream inputs, which are a bit fiddly, because I think I have to flick a switch on the back of the amp each time I switch between bitstream and processor inputs (ie between DVD and Freeview).

    Argh.

Sadly it doesn't do this. The E1, EP10 and XE1 only convert to 640kbps Dolby AC3 via optical out. The first gen players and Xbox 360 drive do convert to dts (sadly what I miss from "upgrading").

Sorry but it does the XE1, E1, EP10 downmix any Dolby TrueHD and DD+ as well as DTS-HD to a 1.5mbps DTS standard track all AV amps will accept a higher encoded standard Dolby Digital track at 640kbps and display it as Dolby Digital it has always been in the specification of Dolby digital it is just that in the US they primarily use 384kbps and we here in Pal land use 448kbps.

So any new HD DVD Audio track that is over the 1.5mbps threshold which all are will be played back on your AV amp through optical as DTS full bitrate, There is only Blu Ray that includes a standard Dolby Digital track encoded on there releases at 640kbps which when played back through the optical port reports as Dolby Digital standard.

    Mines bust then! :D

Seriously, check out page 63 of the XE1's manual. Only dts-HD and L-PCM are converted to dts 1.5. Dolby + and True HD are converted to 640kbps only (as confirmed by my amp). The HD-A1 did convert to dts.

Hmmmm.....just checked the manuals of the E1 and EP10. The E1 does convert to dts 1.5 but the newer EP10 and XE1 don't.

    Great.

    Apologies Digicon ;)

Hmmm....I had the EP10 for about 11 days and on any True HD tracks all I got was AC3 audio.

Does the USB port on the Toshiba HD players let you play standard or HD .avi files from a USB stick?
I ask because I downloads quite a few shows and will the player handle the DivX files from a USB stick?

    Thanks

I know with the PS3 going into my onkyo amp via HDMI for Dolby True HD soundtracks you have to get the PS3 to output PCM instead of Bitstream to get the full Mpbs, otherwise as you say you get the 640k audio

If you can stretch the budget I'd go for the EP35, I guess you've analogue outs on your existing amp so you should be able to enjoy the full 5.1 Dolby True HD if you go for the EP35 (the EP30 doesn't have analogue outs). Other thing to consider looking a bit further down the road I don't think the EP30 will be able to output the full DTS MA format, not much of an issue currently as very few HD DVD's have DTS MA soundtracks (it's mostly bluray) but if they do start adding them well you could be left short if you've got the EP30.

Before you get the LCD tv, I'd suggest looking around as you should be able to find 7th gen 42in Pioneer plasmas still available for around £1,000. Awesome PQ, excellent handling of SD signals, and 1080p/24 compatible. It will even convert 1080i/60 from an E1 into 24 fps. PQ wise will blow any LCD tv away.

I'd second Stuart on getting a plasma over an LCD

you might want to look at the Panasonic TH42PZ70 as well

    Stuart :

Is the EP35 definitely part of the free films deal to your knowledge?

As I understand it the offer should include the EP30 & the EP35 - not too sure about the XE1, EP10 & E1. Details should be released by Toshiba soon so we'll know for definate. I'm sure it will at least include the XE1 as that remains in the current line up of players.

NB I recommended the Pioneer plasma in particular due to it's 1080p/24 abilities, which I believe the Panasonic's do not have.
