Toshiba delays HD-DVD

slow, slow, quick, quick, slow

By Nick Farrell: Friday 30 September 2005, 07:05
ELECTRONICS maker Toshiba is running away from launching its first players supporting its HD-DVD format.

The players were supposed to hit the shops later this year, but now the outfit says that they probably will not see the light of day until early next year. This will bring the HD-DVD launch closer to the first appearance of the the Blu-ray disc, which is backed by Sony.

A spokesToshiba said that the delay is due to marketing considerations, not manufacturing problems.

Apparently it wants to avoid repeating 1997's slow launch of the DVD, for which only a few titles were initially available. They will be released in Japan later this year.

The HD-DVD is backed by Universal Studios and Warner Bros and earlier this week, the mighty Wintel alliance gave it the thumbs up. The Blu-ray has Apple, Hewlett-Packard and Dell on its side.
