Toshiba 43U5863DB - for Mother.

Hi folks.

Currently searching around for a decent set for my mother who is in early stages dementia. This has been recommended to me by a family member (apparently it's a bit better than others in this situation).
Few reviews below on Amazon suggest a few issues however (constant s/w updates would be a nightmare for her).

All I want is a 42"+ TV with basic channels, but with the possibility to program the HD channels (Freeview HD) into a One-For-All (or similar) remote so she gets the picture quality on the main channels but merely has to be press UP/DOWN only only the remote (she often presses AV/EXT etc buttons and loses her channels....

This might mean me talking to Toshiba (or any other brand) and the remote manufacturers (and I've posted a question about this on these boards already).

Worried SD channels at 42" and above will look bobbins and conscious of her eye sight.

Thanks very much.

Toshiba TV'S are just branded Vestels and not reckoned to be good quality.
I would recommend not getting a 4KUHD TV and sticking with a HD TV due to upscaling of your mums Freeview sources. Sony and Panasonic both make 43"HD TV'S.

Makes perfect sense. I'll have a look at those.

Cheaper Panasonic models are also Vestels and overpriced.

I'd stick to Sony, Samsung (which are probably the easiest to use) or LG.
If you're on a budget have a look at Hisense.

At that price/size you're looking at LG Nano TVs which are all IPS
Samsungs, which are a panel lottery, you won't know if it's a VA or IPS panel.
Sony you should be able to find out which it has.

This may be irrelevant to you of course.

Food for thought. Most essential thing is ease of use but would like her to have some HD channels for her to navigate purely by UP/DOWN on the remote. Anything just a little tricky will lose her straight away.
Nothing too pricey either....I'll have a good search around and maybe report back if ok?

Thanks!

Is VA / IPS a big deal? I’m way out if the loop with TV’s atm but sometime in the new year I’ll be looking for a new set for myself so will hit the research.

in the meantime I could do with ordering my mums TV today. Anything off the top of your head you can think might be suitable please let me know.
I’ve no idea what VA & IPS means in terms of my mother’s tv experience but would love her to have something that wows her. She has little else for entertainment these days.

If I can program the HD channels to a remote (sequentially, omitting some etc) I’d be massively happy.

Ill dig around Samsung, Sony & LG.

Think 42/43” will be enough...have a feeling a 50” would somewhat freak her out (with the caveat you do eventually get used to the new set...)

IPS panels can look very blotchy, particularly in the corners with poor backlighting. VA panels tend to be more uniform. IPS panels as well have poor blacks and black uniformity leading to worse contrast and contrast is what really makes your picture pop.

IPS panels are ideal when you need wider viewing angles, other than that you're better avoiding them.

Will have a good look through.
Fine line here between her just having decent picture at a bigger size and leaving no room for her to fall off free view into some rabbit hole thus losing her entertainment for the evening.
Cheers.

I have a Toshiba 4k in the bedroom and you can edit the channel list to remove all the channels your mum won't need and also deselect any of the inputs she doesn't need so they don't even appear in the list, no need for any special remote controls.
