    Hi

I've just bought a Tosh 26WL46 LCD TV.
Set up is a little complicated but picture is very good.

However, at low volume I hear what appears to be noise from a fan in the back of the TV. It's loud enough to hear from the sofa some feet away.

Is this normal? Will it get quiet with use? Have I bought a lemon?

    Any answers appreciated.

    Regards

    BB

    Brian,

I have had two of the 26WL46s, and both have had the fan noise.

My second set is being replaced for a dead pixel, so I will report back if this is present on the new one, but I expect it will be.

    Hi Dave,

I'm looking to buy one of these LCD Tv's and was wondering if the PQ is as good as people report. As I understand it this TV has something called active vision. Not present on the 27" version. Is this something that you select or is it there by default like the Wega technology for sony. Also may I ask where you bought it from & how much.

    Many Thanks

Can't really answer your question, though from what i've read it sounds like toshiba's version of the Wega engine. What i will say though is that the specs on the new 27" seem to have been updated recently to state that it does have active vision.

As far as I'm aware the active vision is permanently on. As for PQ, best check it out for yourself, though I'm pleased with it on mine. XBox and GC pictutres look fantastic, black level is good if not perfect, dvd is great also. NTL digital pictures look good in the main but weaker channels are shown up. Still, a bargain if you can pick it up for £900. I can't say the fan noise has bothered me ever, even at low levels. :)

The original press release did not include Active Vision on the 27WL46, but it is included on the website specs.

I am delighted with the PQ from the 26WL46, and can highly recommend it.

The fan noise is always present on mine, although some have suggested that altering the backlight level will reduce the noise. I have not found it annoying.

First post here ... I just wanted to note the contradictory information on the 27WL46. The Toshiba website itself is very confused. It does list the 27 (and 30WL46) as having Active Vision, component inputs, 1366*768 res, etc. But then it lists the 30WL46 as having the same screen size and overall dimensions as the 27"! Equally the online brochure and the stasia.net websites both indicate the 27 and 30WL46 as having neither Active Vision nor component inputs and the res as 1280 * 720. They also appear to show the "correct" dimensions for both models.

It'll be very disappointing if the 27WL46/30 are as per the stasia.net/brochure specs ... I was seriously looking at the 27" model myself, particularly given the digital input (purely for future connectivity). But the lack of components, etc. would be a "killer" for me, the presence of twin tuners really doesn't make up for these losses.

Hmmm damn, you seem to be right about the Stasia site, i'd swear i went there the other day and the specs had been changed to list 1366x768, active vision, and component input on the 27 incher.. It'll certainly be off my list if there are no component inputs.

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for the response. I have just been to the tosh website and can't see where it says the 27 has active vision. I have now mailed Tosh asking if it is present on this model. I am only going to use this TV for viewing channels from a normal RF cable. No freeview. Before everybody says why would you do that, I already have a 32" in the living room. This is going in the dining room in a small alcove.

Re: Compnent inputs on the 27WL46....
As both the 30" and 27" models in the brochure show a HDTV logo and therefore must be able to accept a 720p signal, I wonder whether the reason there are no Component inputs is beacuse the DVI socket of the DVI-I type, and therefore can accept HD/component in analogue form as well as DVI digital....?
Can anyone confirm (possibly with a photo) what the connections actually are?

    Brian,

Got the third set - and the fan noise is there.

This one has got three dead pixels (as mentioned in another thread), but they are much harder to see this time.

    On to number 4!

Maybe it's time to try a new model? what with all the bad luck you seem to be having. Personally the fan noise is there, but it's minimal (imo). Can't say I've ever really thought about it!? :)

change the backlight setting and see if the noise reduces? This is what happened with me.

Also anyone tried pc input and do they get the picture in the middle or not?
As i get mine far left leaving black line to the right on my 32wl48.
    thanks

The next replacement is arriving on Saturday - if this one is not ok, I will give the 27WL46 a go!

    Jeff,

There is no difference. I got my set from Powerhouse, and had 3 faulty ones delivered before I got one I was happy with.

2 of these sets were marked 26WL46P(B) and came in a brown/turquoise box, and the other two were 26WL46B and came in a brown/blue box.

The only differences are as follows:

    1. One had a white label on the back, the other black.

    2. Instruction manuals are completely different.

Other than that, they are identical.

I'e got a 26WL46 and although the fan noise is there it's not loud enough to bother me as you can't hear it over the TV at normal (and even fairly low) volume levels. I've got no dead pixels either but the RGB SCART sockets can't autodetect PAL/NTSC properly. It's okay if I set manually to NTSC 4 or PAL (although even then it can screw up sometimes) but the Component Inputs are fine. I've contacted Toshiba and they've sent a (3rd party) engineer out who spent more time admiring the picture and cable quality than investigating the fault. So far they've not come back with an answer other than to say they will take it away for investigation as there's a service kit available. They don't say what the service kit will do though so I've asked them to find out. There's no way I'm swapping the set until I've tested the replacement for dead pixels, etc and I don't want to be without my set unless they can convince me that they are going to fix the problem.

Have had this model for over 5 months now and am well pleased with it overall. Can't believe how quickly the price has fallen since then. I paid £1,275 for mine, now it's £800! (original rrp £2,000). Just a shame it lacks HDMI and therefore will be incompatible with Sky's hi-def service, and perhaps even Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

The 27WL46 is the replacement model and add HDMI/DVI input. However, there are no component inputs although I believe you can get cables that convert component to DVI.

    Be careful!

Check that the DVI connection is DVI-I. DVI-D won't handle component inputs.

Sent them an email this morning and have just called them. They have none left in stock at all.
Local shop had one on display, offered it to me for £799 but had no manuel or box. Then told me it was only a few months old. When i pointed out it had probably been on 10hrs a day 7 days a week he said i didn't matter. :suicide:
Looks like i will have to wait for John Lewis to get the 27WL48 back in stock.Quite gutted as the 26WL46 looks a great LCD.
