Hi,

Three simple questions:

Is there a built in DTS decoder?
It still exists a HDCD decoder?
Does it outputs PS in NTSC?

Thank you,

T.

There is no DTS decoder onboard but the player is DTS compatable.

No HDCD decoder, they seem to have omitted this from this model, though the 510 did have an onboard HDCD decoder.

The 520 does output PS but only NTSC.

Then, what are the major differences between the 510 and the 520, apart from the looks?

Would say not a major difference between the two, I know the 520 is compatable with MP3/JPEG, don't know if the 510 was, not from just looking at the specs below anyway.

AFAIK, the 520 was not intended to be a an upgrade to the 510. It seems to be more of a case of providing the same, or similar, features in more up-to-date player at a lower price point (the 510 originally sold for around the £400 mark, compared with £200-£250 for the 520). This is the general trend with all electronic items, in that as time passes you get more for your money.

The 520 still has the 'headline features' of the 510 (prog scan & DVD-A), but the HDCD has probably been 'trimmed' to keep the cost down. Personally, I've never even seen a HDCD, so it's not a great loss at this price point.

No great surprise if MP3 playback has been added, since just about every 'supermarket cheapy' now offers it as standard.

If the 510 has no MP3 capabilities then why does mine play all my MP3 discs without a problem:confused:

As Bob007 said, neither of us said that the 510 doesn't have MP3 capability. We both said that, from the information supplied by Toshiba, it wasn't clear whether the 510 had that capability. If the 520 has it, but the 510 did not (which we now know is not the case), then this would have been an additional feature. Since that was the gist of the original question, it was worth mentioning by Bob007 in his reply.

Getting back to the point, my impression so far is that the 520 will be a nice piece of kit but I'm more inclined wait and save some more cash. The new Philips 963SA should be available by then (hopefully) at a reasonable price. The quality of the specs, and in particular the PAL PS capability, have now turned my eye away from the Tosh towards fabled Dutch masterpiece. :D
