I thought it was at first a mastering oddity but now checked on a couple of DVD's, if I feed a DVD that is 4:3 encoded (ie a TV Program) via the HDMI I cannot for the life of me get the Tosh to switch to 4:3 mode, it always displays as a stretched 16:9 picture, pressing the size selection button on the TV remote gives 'Not available', makes no difference what the Samsung DVD player is setto.

The only way I can make it work is go via the RGB/Scart

Am I just missing something here ?

    Hi there

Does your DVD player have some sort of 'Squeeze mode'? I have the Denon 3910 and you can set the Squeeze mode on the DVD to show 4:3 sources in that ratio through DVI and HDMI.

You are usually not able to change the aspect ration on a tv if viewing through DVI or HDMI.

For HDMI, the width of the screen is based on the player setting, so 720 or 1080 will always give you widescreen. In order to see a 4:3 DVD via HDMI, you have to set the player to 480/576 (not sure of the exact figures, but the lowest digital setting).

Cheers I'll give that a try tonight, for me this was a real showstopper, don;t really mind watch 4:3 stuff at 480 as it's mostly old TV programs anyways
