Tosh 32wl56 and Denon 1920 hdmi Black Bars

Have just recieved my new system as above and have a problem when playing a wide screen DVD on the Denon 1920 with HDMI connection. The black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are 4" each at 480 resolution rising to 6" each at 1080. Surely this isn't right?

The TV controls can not be altered to compensate whilst in HDMI mode, can anybody advise?

A 4:3 ratio film fills the screen with no black bars at all resolutions.
Haven't got a component lead yet so can't check this.

I know on my 3910 when using 1080i I can't get certain different aspect ratios (can't remember which ones exactly). I think it might be something to do with 1080 being a greater res. than the screens native res, although I really don't know so I'm just guessing. 576p/720p seem to be fine tho.
