The planet got bloody cold once , I seem to recall reading somwhere . what was to blame for that ? Now its warming up , can't we blame the same thing ?

If you want to stick your head in the sand, like Bush, yes. The billions of tons of CO2 and other gases that we dump in the atmosphere every year must be affecting the planet in some way.

Whats next? Mother nature seems to be striking out at us all.

So whats your opinions?

Said exactly the same thing to a mate whilst watching the news last night! Not sure if its just that the news is concentrating more on this kind of thing now or what seems more likely IMO that these events are becoming more severe and more widespread

Its as if the planet is saying"OK,youve had your warnings, now its payback time"

I went for 'not sure' but only as Global warming seems a little bit too definitive.
I'd say it's our fault most likely though, we've surely trashed the place by now with all our un-natural industrial processes.. I can't imagine our planet staying so basically stable for so long, only to suddenly start going tits-up around about the same time we discovered petrol etc.

Hmmm... Tornados and Hurricanes will increase in regularity and strength because of global warming as it is cold air colliding with warm air which creates them. The warmer the air the more energy the hurricane or tornado will be.
As far as earthquakes go, can't see it making any difference really.

Problem is, the warmer Earth gets, the colder and crappier the weather will become in Blighty! :thumbsdow

Looks like global warming to me, the fact is the worlds climate is warming and its weather is the result of this.

The question is, are we to blame or is it a naturally occuring warming process similar to the other cooling/warming periods the Earth has been through.

Until recently I had no doubt it was down to us, i'm now wondering, but would rather reduce our emissions and go green anyway, partly to be on the safe side and partly because we sure as hell are polluting the air we breath and the water we drink!

This planet is just doing what a planet does. It's done it to far greater degrees in the past. we try to blame everything but ourselves.

The fact is it doesn't know or care about us. It's nature.

Remember though that the Earth has been through heating and cooling cycles before. Did CO2 emmissions cause it then? Nope. I'm not ruling out the fact they may be causing it this time though.

Though the fact remains that Global Warming and Cooling is a natural occurence, i think it's safe to say we are probably speeding up the process this time round.

What many people fail to realise is that mother nature is a very delicate balance of many things, and that if we offset that balance, the consequences could be catastrophic.

To be quite honest, i'd be surprised if this wasn't just a sign of things to come.

Just my 2p worth...

Just remember that we could cut CO2 emmissions to zero and earthquakes and resulting tsunami's would still happen. What has happened in Pakistan is obviously a tragedy but not one we can do anything about.

The same goes but with knobs on for Asteroid impacts.

Doesn't really matter what we do now anyway. The USA, the main contributor of greenhouse gases and other pollutants has their head in the sand, China and India will soon catch up with the USA and overtake them, we can reduce our emissions all we want in the UK but it won't make a blind bit of difference! :(

in 95 years time there won't be a arctic icecap, and Antartica will follow suit quite soon after due to the run-away effect of melting ice, and the reduction of light reflecting ice.

The Earth has warmed and cooled naturally in the past. Fact. However, from the core samples taken, not over such a short time period has it warmed as much as it is now. Fact. Warming of air currents has caused more hurricanes, and rainforest removal has helped no end in causing - mudslides, rises in local temperatures (More tornados), higher run-off. This means that when a natural disaster strikes such as earthquakes and tsunamis their effects are greatly magnified.

To ignore global warming and mans negative effect overall is equivalent to sticking ones head firmly up a certain orifice. ;)

Global warming MIGHT have caused all EXCEPT earthquakes + tsunamis;)

But since we had an ice age, what 10,000 years ago, maybe earth goes thru natural cycles?

Shame it takes devestation on US shores before they even accept the possibility of global warming

We could argue about whether global warming, gases etc exist, but one has to agree mother nature didn't count on humans buring nearly all the fossil fuels in 2 centuries.

There's no end to the Earth. The Earth will be fine - it's mankind that is in danger. The Earth can shake us off the planet in no time. New Orleans is a testament to that. A whole city gone in a day. The Earth can eradicate us, just like a dog shaking fleas out of its coat.
