    Hi all,

I've owned a Sony 735D for 2 years or so now, and although I think it's a nice machine, I'd like to upgrade to a high-range player that can offer me some of, if not all, of SACD, DVD-Audio, Progressive Scan, better picture and better sound than the Sony.

I would be prepared to spend up to £1,000 but no more.

Please could I have some suggestions as to what is good out there at the moment?

    Many thanks. :)

Pick up a what Hifi they have a review this month off about 6-7 players all in that price bracket. Including an Arcam, Pioneer and some others.

The Pioneer 757 beat them all and its about £700... (even the arcam 88+!!) leaving you £300 to put towards your next upgrade :).

    Hope that helps.

I had a 735 myself and the marantz dv8300 (PAL progressive version) I now own really improves on the 735 in sound (heaps and heaps) as well as picture (especially more detail). And the 8300 delivers all of the above (tho better at dvd-audio than SACD). Be carefull not to sidestep too much as this may bring some disappointment, otherwise you may as well stay with the 735 till it dies as its pretty good.

I'm looking for a DVD for similar money as well. Is the 757Ai PAL progressive, or just NTSC? Specs I've seen seem to indicate NTSC only. And if you can make it PAL progressive, is it "proper" PAL, or just an NTSC conversion which is then output progressive?

If you search this forum you will find a lot about the 757 including a lot of inputs from my side. The 757 is NTSC progressive at this point but a true PAL progressive firmware update from Pioneer is expected.

the denon 3800 is now discontinued , an alternative would be the denon 2900 which will be a universal player and due out soon.
the replacement to the 3800 will not be out till later this year.

So I've just been reading today.
I'll not get off the subject matter here. Although, if I knew the 757Ai would be easy to modify to pal progressive I thing it would be my player of choice now.

I also read the what Hi-Fi review and thought it a bit unfair, as they used the Denon 2800mkII and not the Denon 3800, which is closer to a £1000 than the 2800mkII. I know the 3800 is discontinued but it is still available from most dealers, just make sure you get a late build date player ( after Oct 02 ) I would defiantly give this player a review despite the problems it's had.
I have only had my 3800 about five weeks and thrown all the known problem disks at it, and they all played perfectly. I would also consider the Arcam DV88+ at a £1000 or less.;)
    Happy hunting.

After initially wanting a Denon 3800 I bought the 757Ai. I have to say, I'm very pleased with my purchase.
The picture is 8Ft wide run from a Sony VW11HT PJ. I was suprised at how much of an improvment the pioneer made to the picture with my inital reaction being how good a job it made of skin tones, especially close up. The colours appeared natural and there was a notable difference to the surround sound quality.
DVD audio was staggering, and CD replay was better than I expected.
I did not compare the 757 with the 3800, but all the initial problems and the replacement 2900 put me off the Denon. On top of that, the 757 cost me £599, saving me £200...
One component cable upgrade coming up!
