Not stuff you just dislike but stuff that makes you scratch your head and think "Why on earth is he/she/that so popular?"

    Here goes...

Lou Reed - seems to have a career built around a risque song from the 70's but otherwise complety devoid of a singing voice.

Bjork - screeching banshee - just because you can make a strange noise doesn't mean you should.

Blue Monday by (er forget) - tedious song, droning vocals - very popular. Very elusive as to why.

Van Morrison (ooh a bit contraversial!) - Ok has done some good songs (Moon Dance) but seems to have produced a huge amount of dross along the way based on mumbling.

    off ya go...

On an on over the hill headin for CoRney Island:D

Why on earth do people go out and by covers when very often the cover is no better and often worse than the original. It gets me to think of "artists" coining it off borrowed material and mediocre voices - there's just too many to list.

Fair enough if you're as good as Eva Cassidy was, that's bringing something to the party. If not then they should stick to murdering their own songs. ;)

I think your missing the point, its not about making 'nice' music. These people are popular because they add something different to their music, its called emotion and if you listen you can hear where and why they wrote the song and can empathise with it.

However, most of us like to have a bounce around to bands like Status Quo, but its airhead music, its been done to death and it gets boring because theres no soul in it.

    :lesson: :lesson:

Now Im bored with the sound of my own writing

Karkus, I've not mentioned anything about "nice" music nor Status Quo for that matter? The point of the thread is that there are a number of "artists" who are popular but whose attraction is lost on me - for whatever reason - not saying they are bad just giving my perception of them. Gringotts & John G have the right idea.
    Cheers

I'll go with the above, and add:

    THE WHITE STRIPES

I do like Bjork though, so we'll have non of that slagging her off :D

I'll go out on a limb here and say...

The Beatles, I really cannot stand them!

    I second The White Stripes.

NORAH JONES (read my thread if you really wanna read more about this), although admittedly the more I listen to her album the more I like it - still empty though.

Eva Cassidy - her voice is no great shakes, she didn't write anything, and 95% of her covers are worse than the originals.
Mariah Carey - I'll dance for hours with sheer joy when either her entire career is wiped out or she just DIES and leaves us alone!

Celine Dion - Thank god they've sent her to vegas.

David Gray - bit of an idiot isn't he?

BADLY DRAWN BOY - Hate him with a passion!

    Oh yes - Status Quo.

David Bowie - what's the point in writing wierd lyrics if they don't mean anything?

Travis - a poor excuse for a band in a downing decade for rock.

Coldplay - see Travis comments (and what's that idiot of a lead singer doing with his piano?)

SLIPKNOT - and any sort of evil pathetic 'punk rock/new age' rubbish that is in any way resemblent to this giant mess of crap.

GARETH GATES - I'll stop there before I get really angry.

I honestly can't think of a single artist/group of artists that fall into this category. There are plenty I absolutely hate and think are talentless idiots, but can still see why other people would like them.

    So.... none for me. :)

    I second REM.

    U2 (man, they annoy me)

    Robbie Williams (how? why?)

    Thin Lizzy

Rolling Stones (at best, they seem to be a 6th form cover band who can't keep time)

Whitney Houston ('shouting' isn't the same as singing)

Red Hot Chilli Peppers (nothing to say, really thin sound, very samey)

One of the most pointless threads ever.

Has anyone carefully considered the title for starters?

And Gawd save us from 17 year old music critics...
