I dont know if I should have called it 'bad aspect ratio' but the original DVD release was 2:40.1 whereas the new release is 2:35.1

Either the original release was open matte or the new release has been cropped but information has been lost on the new release which shouldnt have been so its a toss up between better picture quality or more picture.

That information is wrong, I have it and its 2:40.1

As for the differences between them, below are some screenshots, original on the top, new release on the bottom...

All I know is that I bought my projector, and watched gladiator. It blew me away.
Thought the next cinematic experience HAD TO be Top Gun. Mates came over. And the image quality was really poor :(
Even now, comparing to many films, it was very poor. The film deserves better.

And yes, I know its from '86, but they can still remaster

Me too, the new one seems to have lost a lot of information, cropped heads and a cropped fist !! Won't bother if this is the case.

Mine arrived yesterday and we watched it last night. I will post a bit more about it when I get home from work later today with a few comparison shots of it and the original R1 release on my screen but just had to say that the 6.1 DTS mix is amazing...but has it's flaws ;)

Right, sorry I didn't post about this yesterday...long day at work and I ended up falling aslepp just after I got home :D

Anyway, after watching this disc I have to say I am dissapointed and delighted in pretty equal measures. The best part is the new 6.1 DTS sound which is just stunning

The amount of seperation and rear steering effects is fantastic and the opening music by Harold Faltermyer is so crisp !! I can't get enough of the way this movie now sounds...it has taken on a whole new life.

Unfortuntaly the picture is a different story. The film is full of noise and grain and there is some print damage in places too :( The opening scene with the guys on the aircraft carrier is terrible to look at and only a handfull of scenes throughout the movie could ever be classed as above average. It does not look like any restoration work has been done to the print at all....which makes the odd aspect ratio even more annoying. When comparing the original R1 release to this R2 re release it is obvious that there is quite a lot of picture missing from top and bottom with some actors losing half their heads in long shots

The colours seemed to have been turned up anotch too which works in some scenes but not in others.

Overall I am glad I bought the disc for the fantastic price of £6.99 and, for me, the sound alone is worth the price...but I would have loved to have seen a bit more spent on the picture and would love to know if anyone has an explanation behind the reasoning for the new aspect ratio?
