I have only watched it up to 70 but so far I’ve seen Robbie Williams and Alistair Crowley voted in at a higher place than Edward Jenner the person devised the vaccination and in doing so saved millions of lives.

What are these voters on?

And you were expecting anything different?
You only have to ask 30 people on the street and they'll say famous "popular" people of the day, a month later it will have changed. Meanwhile most people have never heard of the really great people from long ago.
Hence the reason I gave this a miss.

It's utter crap.
Tim Berners Lee vs Princess Diana
In absolute terms I suppose Great Britons of recent memory, well let's see.......Nigel Mansell, Carl Fogarty, Colin McRae...

The programme only works if you accept that it's based around (a) well known people and (b) popular culture.

The BBC knows damn well that a programme of the REAL top 100 Britons would be unwatchable to a large audience as most would never of heard of any of them and even if they had, would consider their (life/world changing) achievements 'boring' in comparison to watching Beckham knock in free kicks to allow us to progress one stage further in football competitions, where we then lose and go out anyway.

It was always going to be populist since it was done by nominations by Joe Public. hence in this instance Great = Famous.

The example of 'T.E.Lawrence' was given as a man that was probably only nominated because of the great movie by David Lean. If the movie had been ****e then Lawrence probably wouldnt have got a nomination.

Also....

What has happened to Ann Robinsons Nose!!!

Looks like shes spent too long in Hollywood and has been sucked into the Plastic Surgery world.

This program was an embarrassing testament to the absolute stupidity of people.

Sorry but anyone who voted for Beckham is simply thick. In my opinion, of course.

I think Will Self put it best when he said it was a weighted average, skewed towards the modern and contemporary.

if Lady Di wins I will revoke my citizenship as I would not want to be associated with a country that stupid and naive.

Why ever not quite easy to spot she did far more for this country than at least two others.

granted she is more worthy than either Diana or John Lennon, but as someone who surpressed other religions than her own, I don't think she deserves a spot in the top ten. Just my opinion of course.

Shame she didnt supress her own religion too IMO :p

In ernest though. My criteria is someone that helped to make this country what it is, not just someone that was famous.

Thats why I voted for Cromwell.

He was quite pugnacios, overbearing and at times tyranical. But it was part of his greatness that helped to make this country (at one time) great.

As for Lennon, Diana, Beckham, John Peel, David Attenborough, Tony Ben, Enoch Powell, Tony Blaire!!!! Britains most famous, maybe. Britains Greatest. NEVER

WTF is Princess Diana doing in there? Amount of people crying at your funeral is not proportionate to 'greatness' I'm afraid.

For me it has to be Churchill. He ensured that everything that our society and country had become up until the Second World War was allowed to endure and progress to what it is today.

And remember, without him, we wouldn't even be able to be asking/discussing this issue openly.

Whilst I think that Churchill was a great wartime leader its difficult to say that we wouldnt have won the war without him.

for me Churchill was a Great Person (author, soldier, politician, etc) but im not so sure he made the country what it is.

Always a difficult issue though since everyone uses different criteria to asses.

Always surprised me that so many people were hyped into grief for an 'alleged' drug using, pregnant with an illigitimate baby socialite when Mother Terresa died in the same week after devoting her ENTIRE LIFE to self sacrifice and serving others.

I quite agree.

It would have been interesting to see how her death would have been treated at the time and subsequently had she gotten the purposeful (and very selfish - she has two kids remember) stair case tumble right, rather than the accidentally offing in Paris.

Interesting, I must have missed that. Had she tried to off herself before?

Also little seems to get made of the fact that she 'got about' a bit...
