I also think Joe Satriani can play with emotion.

Joe Satriani is amazing, Who were he othere members of the Band, that he formed, Was it called 3G????

Got to say My Fave's are as already mentioned.

Hendrix, Clapton and Satriani.

Wasn't the third guy Eric Johnson ???

At least he is on the DVD with the two other guitar Gods :)

Sheeesh!! Have you lot no taste??

What about Brian May??

My top 3:

Brian May
David Gilmour
Ritchie Blackmore

These (from Simon6776) match my favourites exacty and in that order. But there are so many great guitarists.
Brian May just makes sounds than no one else does, his style is very distinctive and full of emotion.

G3 were Satriani, Vai and Johnson. These three must be three of the most technically proficient guitarists there are. With Satriani (IMO) being the best (technically) but lets face it his material is mind numbingly dull. I've got his DVD in San Fransisco and once you've watched 1 track where he plays every note on the neck in 1 minute you just don't need to bother the the other 2 1/2 hours.

For me, Paul Kossoff will always be the greatest.

1. Paul Kossoff (of Free)
2. Peter Green (early Fleetwood Mac)
3. Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)

Agree with Paul Kossoff.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned Steve Howe (Yes), an ugly old hippy certainly but a great guitarist.

Nils Lofgren.

No, I couldnt mention him, his guitar work was great during the early yes albums, then, he just went sort of mad. I even have his solo album Beginnings and its crap.

Nils Lofgren however, fantastic guitarist, seen him twice, once with his full band and once with an acoustic set (awesome). I have a recording of his acoustic set Acoustic live and though it might not feature the best material, the guitar playing is fantastic, particularly on 'Kieth dont go'.

Jazz....Pat Metheny without a doubt.....also Jim Hall and Larry Carlton
Rock/Metal....Joe Satriani/Kirk Hammett/Nils Lofgren/Steve Vai(when he's not in full-on shredding mode).

Hmm, all these obvious answers (although whoever put Matt Bellamy is at least in the 21st Century!)

1. Gary Louris
2. Jason Faulkner
3. Dean Wareham

all cracking songwriters too.

honorable mentions to

Adam Schlesinger
Jeff Tweedy
Brendan Benson
Matthew Sweet

night night

Patrick:lesson:

Joe Satriani
Kirk Hammet (Metallica)
Steve Vai

These are my fave 3.
Ta, Neil

Completely subjective topic, contributors will almost invariably list their own favourites - but one name that seems obvious by its omission is Steve Morse - winner of Guitar Player all round guitarist poll 5 times in a row.

It just wouldn't be rock without :-

Frank Zappa

Check out

Richard Thompson

And the awesome

Jerry Donahue
