what does everyone think are the top 3 gfx cards at the minute, and what are the rrp's for them?
7800GTX had for £350+
7800GT had for £250(ish)+
ATI x850 XT PE or nvidia 6800 Ultra, until the new ATI cards are actualy availible to buy in which case replace the bottom 1 or 2 depending on how good they are.
I'd prob stick the X1800XL second there.
I think the XL doesn't really perform as well as the GT, although the 1800XT is ment to give the 7800GTX a run ofr its money for pretty much everything.
From the rumours I've been hearing, the 512mb GTX is gonna spank the x1800xt. Should know the full details in a few days by all accounts.
What for the 1024MB X1800!!
What does it matter how much memory the cards have, it has been shown time and time again that cards with more memory don't perform any better, its not as if 256 is starving the things!
You can only run a couple games on ultra high settings with 512mb or memory - so its just about starting to matter (i use the term matter loosely there).
Those games will eualy run as well, frame for frame on the same gpu with 'only' 256mb of memory, its simply a gimic usualy, for example why does a 6200 le need 256 mb of ram when it can't run any game anyway ?
Lol I said nothing about it being the memory making it faster. The rumours I've heard are that it will have a 550mhz core and 1800mhz memory. Compared to the stock 256mb 430mhz core 1200mhz memory thats a BIG increase.
Obviously having more memory alone does not increase speed of games, im not a n idiot. However, we are told that you need 512mb to run doom 3/quake 4 at ultra settings, which IMO is complete *****. Runs like liquid on my rig at ultra settings and that's just 256mb at 1280x1024 (normally)
Call of duty 2 needs an 512MB card to run the game with full textures on. Games are starting to go that way. It doesn't really matter for most people but there are people that have to have all the top end gear.
I wasn't relying to you, rather people beliving that the extra uualy unused ram provides any advantage. I have just read about the 512 GTX, and it really should be called ultra but i guess that would make things too simple for the customer, i wouldn't be supprised if some less than scrupleous manufacturers bring out standard gtx cards with 512 mb, tricking the majority who don't know the exact specs of the cards they are after.
I agree, it is getting a tad insane in the graphics card world. The other misconcepetion is ppl think they double their ram whn SLi'ing/Xfire'ing. Wishful thinking but not right.
However to answer the OP's original question.
IMO and from what I have seen on benchmarks.
Getting too expensive these graphics cards .
Doesn't have to be, stick with a 15-17" TFT to keep the Res down to a sensible level and you won't struggle too much with something like a 6600GT (Well I don't anyway )
i agree i just bought 7800 gt purely bcause if i dont the tax man will have the money(thats wat i tell the wife any way and thats why i shop at aldi)
Enjoy your card its great, although not sure what tax man you have, if i don't spend £300 he doesn't come and theif it at the dead of night, unless ofcourse the taxman is another name for the wife
soz i didnt explain i just meant if i dont spend x amonunt i only end up paying it out so i may as well buy something i can put through ye old books saying that i dont now wats worse tax man or wife
why do u want a new gcard/tv/hifi/car/ the list goes on
now im really miffed of bought card from ebuyer wehn i placed order 78 in stock 3 days later i get a email sorry no stock
Yea thats what i thought after i posted, just tell the tax man its for staff moral
cut a long story short all the 7800 gt cards were out of stock cant b arsed 2 wait for stock orderded the 7800gtx instead
lets c wether ebuyer can send me this 1 or not
Thats the one i have and quite a bit cheaper than i got it for, but you should have lloked at getting a gt from somewhere like scan or dabs ect.. first.
had cnote with ebuyer a lot of places are oout of stock of both 7800 gt and ggtx
I got pi**ed off with Ebuyer doing this and there crappy cutstomer service so Scan or Aria get my cash now.
Give them a try, a lot of the time they are either cheaper or within a £ or so of Ebuyer anyway.
Anyone know of any articles comparing Xfire and SLi? Probably been discussed and don't want to derail this thread. Or can anyone recommend (with strong evidence) one over the other? At the moment I only play Eve-Online so this won't make any diference but, I do intend on getting back into FPS. Also, I go through a DLP projector. I have not seen any ghosting or colour wheel issues so far, will I with FPS and dual cards?
I'm looking at a new setup and well, tax man again peeps! May as well put that money to some use the misses won't notice and start nagging that i've spent it. Try explaining this taxman stuff to her
Cheers for any info!
Just had a quick scan over this link and it seems pretty good for comparisons. Old, but still has the details : http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews/Specific.aspx?ArticleId=14474&PageId=0
(Lol @ the xfire mobo's being available in june )
More recent results :http://www.amdzone.com/modules.php?...s&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=195&page=1
The problem with xfire is you need an xfire mobo, which there are none of at the mo (the one I've seen looks mint tho, white board with red connections ). The other problem is you need to specifically buy a 'Master' card, again, these are not available to buy. When it is out in vast numbers I have no doubt that xfire will be very good, but with ATi's track record, don't expect it soon. Which is a shame, cos it was what I originally wanted also.
They are connected differently also, xfire requires an external 'dongle' to connect the cards, NV's has a bridge chip internally. With SLi you don't need a 'Master' card, just 2 cards that are SLi enabled, normally advertised on the box, but you can tell on the card itself as it has a small connection on the side for the bridge chip. By all account's you don't actually need the bridge chip either, but it does slow performance down.
Can't answer the projector question tho sorry.
Wow! Thanks for all the interesting Info .... very nice reading.
At the mo you should concentrate more on the individual cards, for example with d3d games ATI cards have traditionaly been better, and if your gonna play games based on the Half Life source engine then ATI holds the advantage while wanting to lay thouse on the Doom 3 engine is gonna be nvidia all the way. More generaly Nvidia has a big advanatage when it comes to open gl (although few ever use it) and ATI has a small advatage in D3D at times especialy source.
Overall if you pick the right cards it doesn't matter which you choose, but you will be locked into the manufacturer whos motherboard chipset you choose.
Having said all this, ATI's crossfire does appear to be the supperior of the two technologicaly, but the execution seems a bit poorer than nvidias.
You could just try and snap up one of those asus sli on a card boards.
Managed to get my XFX 6800GT for £200 off ebay. Fully boxed, brand new with bundled games. Sweeeeeeet.
