apologies if this has been done before, but i was thinking it would be fun and
interesting to dvd collectors and the like, to compile a list of the 10 rarest
most sought after dvds of any region, with collectors maybe sharing which
of the 10 they have in there collections :)

I think it's down to individual taste rather than anything else. Personally I would love to own Armageddon DTS Japanese region 2 but there is no way on earth I'm going to pay £50 - £100 for it.

How about the first release of Frank Oz's Little Shop of Horrors that contained a B&W rough cut of the original ending with Audrey and Seymour dying (as in the stage show) and the Audrey 2's growing to Godzilla like proportions and running amok throughout the city - great miniature effects!

David Geffen didn't approve of this being an extra on the DVD, so he pulled the title shortly after its release.

Managed to pick one up on e-Bay about 3 yrs ago :D

I'm lucky as I got the Little Shop when it came out, which was the day before the withdrawal :) It's seriously unlikely to appear with the alternate ending and ebay seems to be the only way you'll get it now (Seen it for about $120 US last time I looked).

That and the La Femme Nikita Season 2 are my only "withdrawn" sets. La Femme is coming out in March but one episode is having it's music changed due to copyright issues. Not as big a deal as LSOH but nice to have anyway!

My testmold copy of "Short Circuit" that is in fact Cactus Jack appears to be the only one of its kind. It is however worth approximately bugger all.

I remember all copies off Salo going for silly prices on ebay as it was supposedly withdrawn for sale, i then saw the BFI edition at HMV for 9.99 and bought it. Some suckers paid over a £100 for the same edition as i remember, suckers!

    Hi,

A DVD is only worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it! :lesson:

I know that sounds really dumb, but if you think about it, some people are willing to pay lots of money for something (because to them it's rare, or really desirable), whereas other people will only pay so much, before the price becomes not justifiable.

Just as happened with "Salo", everyone thought that the Criterion version was the only legal way of being able to get this film in the UK on DVD, so copies were being sold on e-Bay, and selling for ludicrously high amounts of money. Then the British Film Institute managed to get the film through the BBFC uncut, and suddenly, we Brits could go into almost any high-street store, and buy the same film, for less than £20!

However, having said that, I should think the following, would all be generally considered "rare", by film-fans and DVD producers alike:

    - Brazil (Criterion 3-disc version)
    - Most other Criterion DVD's, especially titles like "RoboCop", "Hard-Boiled", "The Killer", et al.
    - Akira (Double-disc Tin Edition)
    - Akira (Japanese DTS version)
    - Kill Bill and Kill Bill 2 (Japanese Limited Edition Sets)
    - Alien Quadrilogy (Japanese "Alien Head" Set)
    - Little Shop Of Horrors (Original US DVD Release)
    - Oldboy (Korean Limited Edition Boxed Set)
    - Most other Japanese DTS discs, e.g. Armageddon

How on earth salo got passed uncut in the UK is beyond me. The criterion versions still goes for ludicrously high amount though.

That's because some peeps are just looney toons for the Crit label and will pay way above the odds for a version of a movie released by them just to add to their collection - doesn't matter if there's another version that's just as good/better available at a much lower price, it's the Criterion name that's all important! Total madness!!!

Pooch, not sure why this one should be considered rare, as it's still pretty much available at a reasonable price.

I think it is easy to get caught out when buying "rare" DVDs... What most people call rare are just from overseas - on lots of occasions I have bought a DVD from another region which seemed rare over here, but then it comes out on R2 and it isn't so rare anymore. I mean look at the Japanese Alien Head set, I saw people paying over £300 for it, but now that it is coming out in the UK for £75 the value of the japanese version is bound to plummet...

    Hi,

I thought that the "Brazil: 3-disc set" had been deleted long, long ago? Obviously not, and I stand corrected. :)

I think I have a few of the Japanese "rare" DVDs you are all talking about. (even armagedon :D )

Of course they are not rare for me here, but they are expensive. Most new DVDs sell for about 3 or 4 thousand yen which is about 15 or 20 quid.

This cost may seem "special edition like" expensive, but I assure you that these are all standard DVDs.

Japanese superbits go for even more. 5000 yen or 25/30 quid.

Software here costs a bundle, including DVDs.

But on the possitive side, we get a lot of DVDs with DTS and other bonuses that other countries dont get.

Guess how much Dragon Ball box sets cost here?

There are 4 or 5 box sets all together, and each one costs 100.000 yen.

500 QUID! :smashin: for ONE box set! :suicide:

I suppose the most rare item i own would be the T2: Ultimate edtion double sided version, or dvd18 as Dave H put it. I bought this when it was originally released, and paid about £22 for it. Wouldn't think of selling it though, as it's my favourite movie and i definitely want the best version of it. That being said, if someone offered me silly money, i'd probably change my mind.

I've also got the Region 2 edition of Evil Dead: Book Of The Dead, which is one of the nicest items in my collection. I paid about £15 for it on sale in Asda, and i guess it's only really worth about £25 now, but it's the sort of thing that is likely to get damaged over time, and have bits lost, like the plastic/carboard box around it; so i think it'll be very valuable one day as long as i keep it mint.

I also have a few other items which might possibly be considered rare, in the respect that you can't buy them anymore. I have Gone In 60 Seconds ltd edition, which comes with a toy car and several postcards, and I have The Great Escape World Cup edition, which comes in a cardboard box with a huge England flag.

And I also have a few numbered items, namely Alien Quadrilogy, T2: Black Tin and Omen Trilogy (although the space where the number's meant to be is blank, so thats worthless..)
And last but not least, i have the R1 Nightmare on Elm Street collection, which is pretty hard to get hold of, and is superior to all 4 R2 boxsets that have been released since 1999. Got that for an absolute steal of £28 including postage from America on eBay.

I have a MIB Limited or Special edition (R1), supposingly released with a limited quantity. I actually don't know because I never opened it and it's out of reach. (Have the "normal" R1 release, too, that I use for watching.)

Anyone know if it's worth anything?

What about the Queen greatest hits disc that was only available when you bought a panasonic player 8 years ago?

I swapped mine for a second hand copy of something I can't even remember at the time.

Still have the Wallace and gromit's : a close shave disc which again was only available from panasonic at the time.

if so that's the one i've got! apart from that, i don't think i have anything particularly special!

Would be interesting to know whats the highest price a DVD has ever sold for....?

    Rob,

it doesn't have a metal cae as such (the R2 came in a metal case) it has a metal Slip sleeve (which is a real pain because every time you pick it up the amray falls out the bottom  But it does have THREE versions of the film on it and i'm not sure that any other version does (can anyone clear that point up?)
