I would be really interested to hear about your top 5-10 movies that really work well and are a must buy. I have ordered a few after buying the last piece of my home cinema jigsaw ....:)

I hope that the moderators are as sick of this thread appearing once a week as I am and will delete it before the same bunch of people post exactly the same thing as they posted last week and the week before and the week before that.

Whilst I'm not going to get into the individual merits of each, judging from the responses to the myriad versions of this question, it would appear that the following are generally accepted as 'benchmark' DVDs.

Notice I said DVDs, the individual films themselves will obviously not be to everyone's taste and it's unlikely that any one person would love all 10 films but, for PQ and SQ, you won't go too far wrong with these:

Gladiator
Saving Private Ryan
Shrek
The Phantom Menace
Lord of the Rings
U-571*
The Fast & The Furious
Toy Story I & II
Terminator 2: Judgement Day: Ultimate Edition
The Matrix

*purely for the sub workout

You may also wish to consider pre-ordering Monsters Inc., which looks like being pretty much reference material both sound and pitcure wise.

While I agree with Ian on this, it is kind of the most inevitable question new members are likely to ask. Yes, people should use the 'search' facility but in reality people don't tend to and it can often be vague (try a search using the term 'T2' to get info on Terminator for example...)

I notice mags like What Hi Fi publish a list of 'test' discs each month and I guess a large percentage of HC owners like to include a few of these types of discs in their collections. So, why not publish a 'sticky' thread in DVD talk which lists a collection of maybe 20 well established 'demo' discs which can be updated as and when necessary and we could maybe avoid this problem.

As 'films' go I'd vote for 'Amelie', 'Traffic' and 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'. There's not really been any other stand out 'film' after that for me. 'AI' might have been a good watch under all the nonsense that it finally came out as.

Last year was a good year for movies (pure entertainment) though. 'The Fast & The Furious' was excellent, as was LOTR and 'Shrek', 'Planet Of The Apes' was decent.

I also enjoyed 'The Contender', '13 Days' and 'Unbreakable'.

I don't do Top 10's though. Hate putting them into an order.

I agree that when it comes to matters of fact, such as which DVDs have DTS etc, then the search facility is the most appropriate.

However, with matters of opinion, it is fair enough to ask the same questions on a reasonably regular basis, as there are new members whos views have not yet been discovered:)

while some of the films mentioned here are okay for 'maximum impact' type blockbusting, you might also want to try out something more subtle as well.

I wouldn't particularly rec Traffic as a AV test disc either, director steven soderberg decided to steer the vast majority of the film through the centre channel so it doesn't give your system much of a work out, although it is a beautiful looking film.

I'd second the Monster's Inc rec tho... I can't wait to see this on DVD.

welcome carrera2rs

Just wanted to say dont listen to people who are knocking back your question in my book one question is as good as the other. if your interested in what other peoples fav. films are then you have a right to ask.

i have in the region of about 90 DVDs with a whole lot on pre-order. Of my existing movies I would recommend these shows (not necessarily in any particular order)

The Matrix - a fantastic visual effects movie
LOTR - a classic every home cinema nut should have
T2
Saving Private Ryan
Scarface - one of the maddest shows ever
Jurassic Park collection - a fine addition to a Home Cinema provides both sublime sound and picture quality
Gladiator
Harry Potter
planet of the apes
Indedpendance day

good luck with your collection, cya

I see you specialise in exaggeration.

Nevertheless I find it saddening that the DVD Talk forum which was interesting until a few months ago has now degenerated to the level of dvdforums and consists mainly of listings of favourite this, that and the others which are constantly being regurgitated and very little is discussed that doesn't come into the blockbuster category.

I shall take your advice and will not read repetitive threads again as I would hate to give you the opportunity for yet another moan.

You have a interest in good films and I do tend to follow your posts and on very rare occasions Squirrel God also has something interesting to say :p

I agree to a point, although by definition, 'blockbuster' means well known, usually popular films... which in turn are more likely to be talked about.

It's not disimilar in the hardware forum, you could be forgiven for thinking Toshiba, Panasonic, Denon and Arcam are the only companies making DVD players.

The fact is that a large percentage own/like these players and not too many people buy, for example, Myryad players and so consequently there are not too many posts about them.

Some people just want to find out 10 decent demo discs, others want to find out how to construct their own high-end HCPC from scratch... in the end it doesn't matter. Just read what interests you (which, granted, may not be much) and don't click on that which doesn't.

Elitism doesn't always equal interesting or better.

You have a fine line in insults but if you read what I said it has nothing to do with elitism.

My exact words were "very little is discussed that doesn't come into the blockbuster category" and that has nothing to do with elitism but is an assumption that you made incorrectly.

As I am sure many of you will have worked out already, I dont have many friends:(

Well okay, I do have a few friends, but I have only one who is into home cinema and another who is into films. The guy who is into home cinema is a complete moron and the guy who likes films, I very rarely see. This is because he is recently divorced and is currently filling his boots;)

When I found this forum, I was like a kid in a sweet shop. I suddenly had all these people with the same interest. So in my excitement, I posted threads about favourite films and I asked questions that had been asked a hundred times before.

I realised after several weeks that I could use the search facility, but in the early days I was grateful for the patience shown to me by the more senior members:)

I understand how frustrating it can be to read the same things over and over, but I hope I can show the understanding to others that was shown to me when I was new.

HUGE hijacking of the thread!!!

Not many actually answering this new member?

The Matrix
Starship Troopers
Jurassic Park
Terminator
ermmmmmmm and Pulp Fiction, just for the dialogue

Almost forgot..........Lord Of the Rings!

Most of the time i just demo my system with the DTS, DD intros.......the neighbours must be sick of hearing them!
