    Can it only be achieved with same make speakers? Are the tone characteristics of each manufacturors a big secret that no ones telling? Are there any clues in the specifications of the speakers or is it simply trial and error?

    It's simply listening to speakers side by side. It's very difficult to guess what matches & what doesn't & it's usually almost impossible to tell from the Specs.

    In theory of course, all speakers are supposed to be as close to neutral as they can get - so all good speakers should sound similar (i.e. almost neutral)...

    However this is hardly ever the case!
