Legendary DJ Tommy Vance died last night following a stroke on Thursday.

He was probably my favourite DJ/VJ ever and was certainly one of the most recognisable. His passion for music never ceased to amaze me, he was as happy and thrilled with the newest as well as the oldest. A great loss for all. :(

Garrett is doing an obit later on the last curtain call. Very sad news. I've listened to Tommy's various shows over the years, and always enjoyed his passion for, and knowledge of, rock music. He will be (very badly) missed, as he was one of a rare breed of 'rock champions' over the last twenty years. RIP Tommy, me and all my old mates will miss you. :(

Yes a sad loss indeed. I hadn't even heard that he was ill. My fav quote from TV onthe Radio was after a broadcast on the Friday Rock Show on Radio 1 by Rush from the Pink Pop Festival in Holland, late 70's/early 80's...

"Rush, they really are a tasty band, for a 3 piece - WOW!"

I used to listen to Tommy's Friday Rock Show religiously between the ages of 13-18. Loved it. Living in Ireland I used only get it on MW and the sound used to fade in and out, but it was worth it. It was the only rock I got to hear on the radio and his voice and enthusiasm for the genre was infectious.

His voice and name always brings great memories back to me and I wish his family my deepest sympathies at this time.

Rock on Tommy - RIP (Rock in Peace)

You and me both Donnacha, although in Dublin we had the luxury of FM reception on cable :). I still listen to some of the sessions that I taped at the time. The sheer quality of the music overrides the quality of the recording.

    Very sad.

A true legend and someone who brought 'real' music to the masses who knew where he was coming from and could relate to his passion for guitar driven music.

I think Tommy would have liked us to celebrate his life and the music he adored rather than getting too sad about it, but I must admit it did sadden me when I heard. I've got loads of his Friday Rock Show stuff from VH1 on video and will guve them an airing this weekend.
P.S. I was amazed when I found out his real name -
Richard Anthony Crispian Francis Prue Hope-West

For anyone that might be interested I got this in my regular Total Rock email:
That's quite a mouthful of a name he's got. I'm not surprised he changed it once he got into broadcasting. My lasting memory was him on Banzai with the actor who played Madge on neighbours, you had to guess how much each drinked and smoked to give them their gravelly voices. Plus voiceovers for practically everything and the Friday Rock Show. :)

Very sad news indeed, i enjoyed his Friday night rock radio slot as well during the 80's........ got me listening to some great rock & metal music.

With John Peel gone as well, they were two of my favourite DJ's while i was growing up. :(

I'll listen to the Totalrock stream as well, hopefully some good tunes to listen to !!
