To Sky Or Not To Sky - That Is The Question!

I have recently bought a Toshiba 32WLT58 LCD which has integrated freeview. I do have sky digibox (pace) with a basic package (which has more channels than the freeview) costing me £21.00 a month.

The Freeview picture on tv is superb, and if I switch to sky I can't tell the difference - I have to check whether I am watching a sky or DTV channel, the only difference is that occassionally the freeview will have a hiccup which isn't really a problem - like a blip - would be annoying if recording something! Anyway, I have been with sky for over 7 and a half years now and am contemplating on cancelling my subscription. The only thing is, I am not sure what to do - I know there are certain channels I will miss that are not available with freeview or top up (the tv I have has two cam slots which would allow topup), although there are extra 11 channels available with this for just £7.99 a month - a big difference to £21.00 a month. I do also prefer the sky channel info and lay out but I expect I would get used to freeview programme guide eventually.

If I cancelled sky, am I right in thinking I could still use the sky digibox as I do now and use the freeview channels available? They wouldn't take the viewing card away or something? The reason I ask is that I have a digisender on the sky digibox which I use for watching sky upstairs (works brilliantly), however (after consulting with digisender company) the digisender wouldn't work from the integrated freeview tv - unless it was left on, and they couldn't guarantee it would work then!! The only solution then would be to make my digisender redundant and buy a cheap freeview box for upstairs.

Another reason why I would want to keep the sky digibox - I have the toshiba RDXS34 dvd recorder, which has an IR jack which enables to change the channels for programmed recordings and videoplus - not sure I would be able to programme any recordings straight from the IDTV.

Hope you are following so far!

If I phoned sky up and said that I wanted to cancel my subscription, would they try to persuade me to stay, and perhaps lower the £21.00 a month - give me a package deal that would be worthwhile?

If I did leave and decided after a couple of months that I wanted to return, how hard would it be to go back and would they punish me by charging me more than I am now???

Can anyone advise please

If you rant to cancel and they thought you were sincere than they would probably try to convince you to stay and may offer incentives, half price deals etc but even they didn't you may still get a phone call a month or so later with a deal.
If you do cancel then the existing smartcard becomes a Freesat card but the channel lineup on Dsat is not the same as the channel lineup on Freeview so don't expect to watch E4 and a few others on the digibox.

There is no punishment for re-subscribing, they will be delighted to take your money if you still have the smartcard but it is likely they will make you an offer either when you call or a bit later.

I've recently bought the Toshiba 32WLT58 and the Freeview picture is stunning. Even analogue is superb!
Did have Sky for many years but did not really get our monies worth from it so I cancelled (by letter) at the start of the year. The Sky equipment was old anyway and this seemed to be reflected in the poor picture quality. I really wasn't interested in any half price deal from them so decided to have an external ariel to ensure the best possible Freeview reception.
Now thinking of a PVR although they appear to be 'bug' ridden so may go for the Panasonic recordable DVD with built in Freeview tuner.
