Good grief where does one start? This is such a philosophical question and one that is extremely personal to the individual.

How is happiness quantified? Cognitive research suggests that fulfilment is achieved through a balanced lifestyle - and that that balance is again specific to the individual.

Perhaps if one understands that their time on earth is but a fleeting one and embraces the culmination with a glad and happy heart. Then if one sets out to make the best of that time surely that is a great foundation?

Remember, without you the world does not exist. How can this be? Well, before you came along did anything matter? Did it hurt? What were the problems? I often wake in the morning, smile at myself in the mirror reminding myself that I am amazing and unique and that if I really wanted to I could change the world. This is true for all of us, no matter how low or fragile we may at that time feel.

I am not attempting a sermon on life here, but I believe that if we remain lawfully and morally just then happiness is ours for the taking.

Whilst I am not a religious person, I find the following line both powerful and spiritually uplifting

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference"

Good luck mate - keep on smiling

Think before you do anything, easier said than done. I seem to be expeert at getting things wrong. 2 choices and most take the wrong one. could say one stupid thing i've done this week, i'm not going to because of all the 'you were stupid to believe it' remarks that'll come back, lets just say i was mad. It has bought me down to earth with more than a bump, and i've no one to blame but myself. Just trying to improve my current situation and ended up worse.

    It's a real pisser of a week.

And probably worse over the next few weeks with an MRI, and I'm not looking forward to the news as I fear my conditions got worse.

It's not easy sometimes looking on the bright side. So i know how you feel.

    HI,

The only tip I can truly offer you, is to be a pessimist! Expect the worst in everything, and then things can only improve! :D

Failing that, :censored: the government, and don't let the b*st*rds get you down! :lesson:

Theres always people worst off than you. People who have lost limbs, got aids, cancer etc. There are people who are homeless, starving and orphaned.

I am always grateful for my life and the things I have around me. Instead of the glass half empty I always look at it being half full. Look at what you have got rather what you havent got and be gratefull.

Life can throw some bad turns at us and at times we can all feel alone and lost. But you cant let it bring you down. Concentrate on whats good in your life and to hell with the rest.

Thats my take on it all. I hope you cheer up. :smashin:

Listening to 80's music cheers me up. Especially when I realise I don't have to live in that god-awful decade.

A couple of other songs that cheer me up include:

Live it Up - Mental As Anything
Got My Mind Set On You - George Harrison
    I Believe - Marcella Detroit

I also believe that going to bed early keeps you happy but obviously I don't practice what I preach :)

I find when i'm feeling down that listening to Portishead, partcularly tracks like Roads, and All Mine starts to bring me out of it.

Failing that I usually stick on The Wall, and start watching it from the bit where Geldof takes a flaky in his apartment right up to the end of Comfortably Numb.

quoted for total truth couldnt have put it better myself Razor :smashin:

i never let myself get down and despressed at all as i treasure all the good things that have happened to me and that possible will continue to happen to me and my family. then you look around the world and see the things that happen for example terrorism, natural disasters etc and it really makes me think when i have a moan at something. there is always a vast majority worse off than you.

my tip for happiness is ermmm spend your hard earned money

I think the thing is you've got to recognise and accept that there will be times in your life when things don't go quite right. People expect to be happy all the time and life don't work like that. As long as you're prepared for it then you can deal with the times that things don't quite go the way you thought.

That and realising that there is always someone worse off than you. That things will always improve.

Hey life is good most of the time - just gotta put things in perspective!

As for what works to make people happy?? Well everyone's different so there's no set rule. Just find what works for you and use it when you need to.

For me? Shopping (not just clothes but gadgets too!) nice food, drink, company of friends, good music, a good book. Different things cheer me up at different times.

Alcohol can have depressive qualities but I generally find that having a good time out with my mates or just enjoying a nice drink easily overcomes that aspect. :) :zonked:
