Yes! No tears shed for those useless gits! I made the big mistake of buying my last OEM PC from them. A nine month nightmare.

    Good riddance.

From what I remember, they paid their staff peanuts ......

I remember working with an ex employe who used to work as a line manager ( senior technician ) sorting out problems in their build / returns

    ..... he was on £12,000

this was about 8 years ago, but it was still a pitance considering he came to us and was earning £15 - 20 /hr.

Granville were employing underskilled guys at that time ... I'm not sure about later. Because alot of people consider themselves competent enough to put together a PC, they get employed to do it professionally in some of these companies .... but its one thing doing it at home as an enthusiast, its another solveing peoples technical problems on a dead line in a professional manner.

I remember 'fixing' one of thier pc's for a freind ... he bought the unit new with a software bundle .... including DOOM.
...... shame the sound card they speced for the system was incompatable with the game .....

Its the same in the banks, civil service, schools and retail industry .... they pay their technical staff ( IT side ) very low wages.
As a result, they get a combination of underskilled, incompetent employees ... and competent employees that spend more time being angry about the pay and situation than being productive.

Its no wonder they have problems.

It's still a shame about the 1,500 employees that will lose their jobs but computer assembly is so competitive nowadays with comparatively small margins.

Another downside is this will just make Dell even more dominant.

I don't think Tiny were ever serious competition to Dell.
They made rubbish and offered very poor value for money.

I don't see Dell intrinsically exploiting people with limited knowledge of computing to generate their revenue.

    Good riddance to them.

Time's up guys. That's what you get for making Tiny profits :)

It is sad about the loss of any job, more so because these are British manufacturing jobs that will probably cause more work to go out to the Far East. 1500 jobs plus all the support work, whatever you say about Tiny & Time it is a sad day :(

I bought a laptop from tiny about 6 years ago, before they went under the last time. It was poor quality and I wasn't very happy with it. Now have an acer laptop, and am loving it since sorting out the networking!

They have closed down all of their shops, laid off all but 100 of the workforce and Administrators have been appointed.

In view of the huge overcapacity in computer manufacturing I can't see anyone wanting to take over this operation as most will just be glad that a major competitor is out of the way and will already be on the doorstep of their major customers trying to push their own products instead.

Frankly Ian, after the attitude the majority of their staff I dealt with (which was a lot) took my sympathy level is not high. Shame for the area that that many jobs have been lost. But as before, good riddance to bad rubbish.

    Exactly.

I wouldn't buy a Dell either, but that's because of the "dell only" upgrading, and because of the modest quality of the components you need to straight away, not because of poor QA or support.

Probably trickled down from higher up and the conditions they were placed under, and time to deal with problems.
If they were making crappy stuff they must have been very busy.

Loosing ones job is not the nicest thing in the world, especially if jobs in the area are hard to come by.

Not all Garret m8. I, and I'm sure plenty of other people on here, work, or have worked in jobs in which they were under pressure to maximise profits while giving barely adequate support. That doesn't mean you have to be a total ****wipe when dealing with said customers though. The staff there were the worst I've ever come across. Rude, arrogant, dismissive and unhelpful. Even worse than the council!!!

I had the local trading standards involved and even they were shocked by how offhand the staff were, and worse, how many lies were told! They took great pleasure in sorting it all out for me............. :)

I reckon this will be a blow for the PC magazines as well. When I used to subscribe to Pc Plus there was always dozens of pages of Time/Tiny adverts in there, they must have lost a big percentage of their advertising income now.

I've had plenty of crap jobs.

However just because the job was rubbish didn't mean I was and I always did any job I had to the best of my abilities regardless.

If you take a job do it well otherwise get out of there.

The script mentioned in the pics:
"Administrators have been appointed and at present are working on a plan to continue supporting customers. Until that is decided we aim to provide full telephone assistance to all customers at a limited service.

We aim to have a better understanding of how we will continue with support by the end of tomorrow. Please bear with us until that decision is made"

I think Time went under because Spock stopped advertising their products. If a vulcan turns his nose up at a computer - it must be naff.

Just an update for anyone who owns or had ordered a PC. I read in PC Pro that some members of staff have set up a support/information site, aptly titled:

    http://www.tinycon.com/

I still subscribe to PC Plus and, in the latest edition, there are countless adverts throughout. Looks like the mag will be getting even slimmer.

On a similar note, Dell seem to be offering some real bargains. Are they heading the same way?
