iPhone Lite set for S.E Asia debut?

It has long been rumoured that Apple has been looking at producing a cheaper iPhone to expand its userbase and a report published by China Labour Watch, investigating working conditions inside Apple's factories, would seem to confirm their existence as a reality.

The report reveals what employees are currently working on and includes a mobile device that isn't currently in Apple's line-up.

"Pegatron primarily assembles cell phones and tablet PCs for Apple," the report states. "Its assembled products include iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and low-priced plastic iPhones."

The report goes on to quote a Petragon worker who stated in a case study: "Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple."

The fact that no iPhone currently on the market sports a plastic back cover would seem to be telling. The iPhone 4 and 4S have a glass back, with the iPhone 5 is backed in aluminium.

The report coincides with Apple's CEO arrival in China, where it is believed he is to hold talks with local network providers in a bid to entice them in to carrying more of their products. Clearly a cheaper version of the World's most iconic smartphone would be of great interest.
