I was bemused to read in HCC today the following "Velodyne has developed two new THX Ultra 2 certified subs, the HGS-18 and HGS-15"

Am I correct in assuming that HCC are incorrect and that infact the HGS-18/15 have finally been given THX approval or is HCC correct and Velodyne has changed the spec slightly to gain THX approval.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I haven't seen HCC yet and don't know the definitive answer to your question but the HGS is already well over THX Ultra spec and the "Seal of Approval" as you put it will be the result of paying the necessary fee to allow Velodyne to append their logo to their marketing effort.

If the spec is exactly the same as the present HGS-18/15 then HCC should be ashamed of themselves, I'd expect a journalist in the trade to at least know that the HGS range has been out for many years and is allready in it's "Series II" guise.

This coupled with last months subwoofer roundup in the mag doesn't bode well for HCC in the credibility stakes when it comes to subwoofer know-how.

Enough ranting from me anyway :)

P.S - I'm a subscriber to HCC and I love the magazine so don't take this thread as an attack on HCC or it's staff, it's just that they know jack about subs

I'll eat masses of humble pie if the spec has changed

To be perfectly honest, since becoming a regular on this forum, I take bugger all notice of reviews etc in these mags, including HCC.

Peeps on a subscription get the mag before it's released in the shops sometimes, apologies if people were wondering where I was reading this article from

Having owned a number of THX subs, I personally agree with Ian J, my new HGS-18 is just not even in the same league.

I am the first to confess that I had never heard the depths that the HGS can get to, or should I say feel. I have spent the last few days turning it down and down and the volume on the amp up and up.

Every CD/DVD sounds complete now and I am hearing so much more. Granted I was using a KEF 30b most recently, which was a come down from my pair of KEF AV1 THX subs.

The sound of the system used to get mushy when at higher volumes, now it is so clear, if this make sense, it seems quieter !?!

Had a huge grin when I decided to go over reference, and pushed the system to 105db at 2 mtrs last night. Frighterning clarity and power. Total harmony.

The near total removal of distortion in the sub, is remarkable.

A pleasure to own and behold.

Gozilla is here, BE AFRAID, VERY AFRAID, just ask Mark Ward......

    Rgds

More than 2 months after getting an HGS 18 I still find myself getting all giddy with the performance of Godzilla, got my X Box yesterday and the HGS 18 makes Sega GT the best sounding game I've ever heard bar none. If you run the wheels over the stiped bit at the side of the road (what is that called btw :) ) the HGS 18 shakes the room, couple that with the rumble effect in the controller and gaming nirvana is realised. Musically it's unbelievable, a song like Madonna's "Erotica" with it's pounding bass notes is demo material..................I'm getting that giddy moment again :D

    I'll shut up now

Thanks for your thoughts Nathan. You've just found out that there is only one. His name is Godzilla
Soon, there will be the ultimate "one"
I don't like the name 1812 so I'll have to come up with a more suitable name for him. Question 4 is another milestone in the making.

Perhaps next year, Sam will have stopped trying to poke drivers with a pencil or stick and I can have a front firer. I'll start saving up for it now.

Any idea whether this monster will be coming over here and if so, a likely price.

Chip may have been referring to the 1812 when he asked about a price. I believe the price for these is likely to be into five figures.

It was quoted as $15,000 in the States I think? So expect £15-20K over here if it even becomes available at all. Could be wrong.
