Do any forum members have any experience of this.

I am considering upgrading my Onkyo 989 to Ultra 2 spec. I believe that THX Ultra2 has a Lucas Film specified DSP to derive 7.1 channel information from a 5.1 source. Does it sound good and does it work with DD & DTS?

    Thanks in anticipation.

    Hi Gary,

Yes it's £400. Did you manage to get a 989?

    All the best.

    Hi.
£400 is pretty good vs the denon £600.
I am still on the look out for a decent s/h amp,but I did pick up a servo 15 today which made my day.
Is the 989 all that you hoped it would be?
    All the best
    Gary

My question was perhaps a little ambiguous.

I was hoping for comments regarding THX Ultra2s 5.1 to 7.1 DSP.

I realise that probably nobody yet has the Onkyo Ultra2 upgrade as it is only just available in UK but is there anyone who has tried this on a Denon or other amp?

Yes Gary, I love the 989 it is real quality. Sound and construction.

I´ve been using the THX Ultra 2 movie & music modes on my Denon. I actually prefer it to THX Surround EX if you want the back surrounds engaged. The music mode does´nt trim the treble of the front speakers like the movie mode does. You can use these two modes for Dolby or DTS 5.1, 6.1 EX/ES etc

All in all I quite like it.:)

I have been using THX Ultra II for a month or so since I had my Denon upgraded. I did not think much about it when I had the upgrade done, but I am very impressed ( I mostly used the movie mode). It is very good for 5.1 movies with out a centre channel encoded. The 4 rear speakers tend to blend into a whole sound field ( I used Bipoles across the rear), and disapear.

    An example.

Watching 'The Others' when Nicol is search the room with dust sheets covering everything, it is very scarey, and just before I could swear somebody ran across my room.
