Does anyone know if this trilogy has been released onto DVD. I thought Criterion might have done it but its not listed.

Also, Does anyone know where you can can the Italian Directors cut of Cinema Paradiso. Apparently its quite a bit longer than the Directors cut published in the UK. This is my all time favorite film and I would love the definitive version of it.

    Dave,

You have chosen 4 excellent foreign-language films there! Good man!!!

Alas, the answers are not as pleasant. None of the Three Colours Trilogy have yet to be given DVD treatment anywhere in the world - legally, that is. (You may be able to get dodgy pirate editions, but in my opinion, they aren't worth the money you pay for them.)

The only Kieslowski DVD you can get is a double-disc edition of "Decalogue", on Region 1 DVD. However, it costs about £60 the sound is only in Mono, and the picture quality isn't that great (in DVD terms), but is by no means the worst.

As far as "Cinema Paradiso: Nuovo Version", to give it its original title, again the only edition is the original cinema release that runs at about 2 hours. The longer 164 minute edition is still available on UK video, and occasionally pops-up on FilmFour.

When Tartan DVD released it, in the 2 hour cut, and not the longer version, I phoned them to ask why. Their answer wasn't exactly great. They stated that the 2-hour edition was more popular to audiences around the world. A little bit of a cop-out, me thinks!

Like you, I would love someone to give all four of these movies there proper due, but only someone like Criterion could do the titles justice. I guess we'll simply have to wait... Boo, hoo!

    Thanks for the replies.

Thought it was strange that I couldnt find them anywhere. I have blue and red on video (I wasnt as keen on white) but they really deserve a decent DVD release.

Cinema Paradiso - Apparently there are 3 versions, the 2 hour one (which I have) the 164 minute version, which was released in the UK and a 180 minute version that was only released in Italy. Its the 180 minute version I really want as it apparently puts quite a different spin on the film, especially with the Alfredo charachter.

    ah well.....the search goes on...

Do you have any more good links for buying foreign language films? I am most interested in French and Italian but open to anything.

    Dave,

    Check out DC-DVD at:-
    www.dc-dvd.co.uk

An excellent all-round R1 DVD site. Not the cheapest, nor the fastest, but with excellent service and probably the best catalogue of available R1, R2 and R4 DVD's on the Net!

    Shoka,

If you check the date of my post, you would have seen that I wrote that message (and the lack of availability of the Three Colours Trilogy), was in May 2002!! :p

The films were then released, in the UK, in August/Septmeber 2002! :D

    Sooooo, I was right! :p :p
