The apathy is quite deafening. Oh well I suppose its miles away so cant affect us too much. Maybe if I plant a couple of birch trees in my garden it will help to compensate.

I think you'll find he was reffering to the e-mail being rubbish. Not the rainforest issue!! How can we discuss the subject properly when the basis for the conversation is an e-mail which is full of non-fact.

i think one has to take the email in the spirit that its is meant. If deforestation is taking place at an alarming rate which I believe it is then frankly who cares whether figures are accurate or not?

    Just to summarize the facts:

according to the email - congress are putting through a bill to reduce the Amazon rain forest by 50% ....

a bill that has now been scrapped ( 5 years ago in fact ) was to reduce the requirement of land owners to preserve portions of their own land from 80% to 50%

Only 24% of the Amazon within the border of Brazil is privately owned - this would have equated to a loss of 7.2% IF the bill had been pass and IF all landowners had made use of it.

Since only 70% of the Amazon rainforest is actually in Brazil, that would actually equate to 5% of the Amazon.

    So

this email you say we are being complacent about wants us to campaign against a bill

    - that was defeated and scrapped 5 years ago
    - that says 50% of the Amazon will be lost ... but actually it would have been 5.04%
    - is posted on several hoax sites / urban legends sites detailing that its aload of rubbish ;)

I doubt anyone will argue that there are serious issues with the environment and that we should support campaings to save the planet, it just would be better not to fall for fake emails and made up information - then try to critise others for not taking it seriously.

losing 7.2% of the Amazon would be an absolute disaster IMHO

As its a country run by Oligarchs where corruption is rife the figure of 24% is pretty menainless . "Facts" are open to interpretation.A little divergent thinking might be in order.
I certainly wouldnt dismiss the email out of hand even if the figures arent entirely correct. Just as there are people who persist in refusing to accept there is such a thing as global warming there are other ostriches who wont accept the environmental vandalism that is taking place in Brazil

it would have been 5.04% .. or 7.2% of the Amazon the lays within the borders of Brazil.

.... and the bill was scrapped 5 years ago.

I agree completely that it would have been a disaster.
I just don't agree people should make false claims - as it does more damage to to any cause in the long run.

For example, the vegetarions brought up the terrible issue of battery farming in the UK - something that is both accurate, potent and provable in debate ... however, many carried on to make wild inaccurate claims about other issues that were based on made up facts and lies ..... which destroys their credibility and severly damages any future argument they make.

Its much better to stick to provable facts and maintain credibilty if you want to change things for the better and have people actually take you seriously.

here is where you and I differ completely.

    I deal in 'facts'

facts aren't really open to interpretation - at least not in the terms you are illuding to

either there is a current bill on the table in Brazil to reduce the Amazon by 50% ....... or there isn't

    .....which there isn't.

Its black and white -- which you seem to want to argue.

I'll show you something that Diane my partner got from one of her frends who went sending it round to all the girls, putting the fear of god in them.

I've just been forwarded this email. Please read on, it's not very
    >nice, but something I think everyone should be aware of . . . . . .
    >. . . A woman at a nightclub on Saturday night 05/03/05 was taken by
    >5 men, who according to hospital and police reports, gang raped her
    >before dumping her. Unable to remember the events of the evening,
    >tests later confirmed the repeat rapes and along with traces of
    >Rohypnol in her blood, was Progesterex, which is essentially a small
    >sterilization pill. The drug is now being used by rapists at parties
    >to rape AND sterilize their victims. Progesterex is available to
    >vets to sterilize large animals. Rumour has it that Progesterex is
    >being used together with Rohypnol, the date rape drug. As with
    >Rohypnol, all they have to do is drop it into the girl's drink. The
    >girl can't remember a thing the next morning, of all that had taken
    >place the night before. Progesterex, which dissolves in drinks just
    >as easily, is such that the victim doesn't conceive from the rape
    >and the rapist needn't worry about having a paternity test
    >identifying him months later. The drug's effects ARE NOT TEMPORARY-
    >They are P*E*R*M*A*N*E*N*T! Progesterex was designed to sterilize
    >horses. Any female who takes it WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO CONCEIVE. The
    >weasels can get this drug from anyone who is in the vet school or
    >any university. It's that easy, and Progesterex is about to break
    >out big everywhere. Believe it or not, there are even sites on the
    >Internet telling people how to use it. Please COPY (NOT FORWARD)
    >this to everyone you know, especially girls. Be careful when you're
    >out and don't leave your drink unattended. Please make the effort to
    >PASS this on to all you know... Guys, please inform all your female
    >friends and relatives. PLEASE PASS THIS ON

Total and utter rubbish, just like the 50%. Anybody who fell for that might for the sake of pride having fell for such a claim might say yeah but women do get raped.

Well yes they do and the the rain forrest needs protecting, but dont we know that already? Please check things out before helping BS get spread about.

Have the grace to hold your hands up when you fall for it to:laugh:

the thing is I dont really care whetrher figures are "factually" correct or not . I just happen to know that deforeststion is taking place at an unacceptable level , whether it be in Peru Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia ,Venezuela or Brazil it doesnt matter. Coupled with that, indigenous tribes are being driven off their homes by unscrupulous loggers. Now if this "bogus" email with incorrect statistics draws attention to this then its doing something right. As I said A LITTLE DIVERGENT THINKING IS REQUIRED(plus a glass or two of red wine :D

    Come on Ian:laugh:

I know we're becoming a fat nation but if i was to pass on this mail: Dr sean flabmister along with his eminent colleague Dr Nick Riviera, claimed by the year 2050 the average life expectancy of the average person living in the uk will be 50.

If i passed that on, then realised it was made up. I'd not have the cheek to say yeah but people are getting fat aren't they:laugh:

Hello!!! Mcfly!!! Some news we didn't know please:laugh:

You're hearts in the right place i'll give you that

What I'm saying to you is that it is the basic message behind the email that counts forget the statistics. It originated in Sao Paolo . Now I wouyld have thought soemone living thewre would know the seriousness of the situation.
YOu say only 24v % of the Brasilain rainforest is privately owned . Thing is there are no set boundaries in the jungle . A guy who has 100000 hectares will also lay claim to another 50000 that happens to be adjacent and he'll pay the local head honcho to keep his trap shut. Capiche?

What I'm saying is that I dont belive or trust this an inch:

"'s current Forest Code, established in 1965, requires landowners to protect a minimum of 80% of their pristine rain forest land holdings from development. A draft law recently put before the Brazilian Congress proposed that the minimum area of protection be reduced from 80% to 50% (and that the minimum be reduced from the current 50% to 20% in savannah areas as well). The proposed law was shelved by Brazil's Congress on 18 May 2000, so the specifics of this petition are now outdated (and the e-mail address given is no longer valid)."
