I've noticed alot of thread closures lately because of the whole hd dvd and BR war thing getting out of hand. What about hd movies being seperated into two appropiate sections like AVS ( one for HD DVD and one for BR ) where we can all have good topical conversations about movies in whatever format?

Not a bad idea- sadly as in AVS it wold not work.

The HD DVD fan boys would not stay in the HD DVD threads

The BD fan boys would not stay in the BD threads

And those of us who have both would be stuck in the middle.

Its not the movies that debate is ever over- its what format they are on, which is best and which will win.

I agree its frustrating and some members ruin it for the majority.

I'd agree but I'm not sure it works that well in the high def forum - I thought dividing that forum would work - BD fans stick to their section, HD fans to theirs. However take a look at the HD DVD forum - it has around 4 or 5 people whose only interest in the format is to attack it and do not own/have any interest in player ownership.

I first thought the same about splitting the trading forums into two, one for Blu-Rays and one for HD DVDs. However a few months on, you really do just notice how many owners are dual format now. I like to have all the high def discs in one section. Yes it does cause some out of hand debates, but they seem to have calmed down now, thanks to the strong handed approach from the mods. Generally I find people in this section are just like me, lovers of film and want the latest news and information on the best possible version of a movie.

Might be a controversial observation, but I thought the Warner thread was closed too early.

You're always going to get the odd comment that sails close to the wind, but I thought this particular thread still had some legs for proper debate and there were some good points being raised from both perspectives.

The HD-DVD forums were starting to become the place for HD-DVD fans to secretly bash Blu-ray without fear of Blu-ray supporters catching them.

Strange that we see so much mention of Blu-ray in a HD-DVD forum?

I'm staggered this is an issue at all

When I went "HD" I felt I had to have both formats in order to get all the films I wanted ie: cover all the market.

Whilst i don't like this position in the market place and the need for 2 or even 3 players (if you include multi region SD films) I accepted it.

Do i favour one format ... No

Both look and sound equally good so why all the fuss

Yeah, but BluRay supporters have their own forum to 'bash' HD DVD without fear of HD DVD supporters catching them. So it all should balance out.

Well there will always be mention of both formats - even the hardest of the 'there must only be one format' brigade must now be looking in the mirror and seeing how wrong they were. But the idea of seperating the two formats is to keep the remaining fanboys apart until such time as dual format players sweep in and put those people firmly in the margins.

Perhaps because somepeople prefer red or blue? Perhaps because people feel the need to be part of a faction or team? I really don't understand it either - high def movies are why we are here.

I have some sympathy with that, though I don't agree with some of what is implied.

Ultimately, these forums should be a great resource for anyone wanting to find a bit of info.

It's not difficult to see how, if no-one was allowed to say anything anti-BD in the BD section (or vice versa), it would become an uninformed, biased, back-slapping exercise.

It's only right that people can challange the latest news about 1.1 discs maybe not working on 1.0 players or TL51 discs being on the way.

See I dont find that so much- if the Blu boys want to stay together and bash HD DVD, believe all there own hype etc that is fine as long as the HD DVD boys dont come in and troll.

Same on the HD DVD camp, if they want to all get together and bash BD, big up TL51- fine al long as no BD trolls come in.

It people who so blindly follow one format, that feel the need to make other people feel stupid for buying into the other format that ruin threads.

Luckily such idiots are starting to get week long bans- hopefully this will reduce the number of threads having to be locked

Rasczak, Rasczak, Rasczak, *sigh* come back after CES 2008 and then tell me I was wrong and then I'll be first to tell you you were right, if that so happenes to be the case.

Saying how wrong they 'were' implies a wrong decision has already been made before any conclusion to the war has been reached. Until WB or Wal-mart decide which way they're going I think it's a bit premature to declare who's right or who's wrong at this point.

I certainly remember you telling us as fact that Universal were going neutral at CES 2008, and that BD would be declared the de facto winner.

I don't see myself as blindly following one format though. At the time HD-DVD only had one exclusive studio which a realised I could live without so the logical choice for me was Blu-ray.

    And now?

Paramount have gone HD DVD-only, and doubtlessly will be for a while. Even the best-estimate BD fud claims the deal is for 18 months, so you can forget about any Paramount BDs until 2009 at the earliest.

HD DVD standalones at £149 anytime now.

    Tempted?

    Go on, admit it. :smashin:

I agree. I thought it was closed far too early. As long as it is a reasonable debate, then I really cant understand the need for closure. If anyone is way out of line then a suspension should kick in. To be honest, I have rarely seen any really offending posts.

The funny thing is, two people have just had a spat elsewhere.

In one of the posts, someone shouted that the other person obviously didn't have a girlfriend.

    He got a ban...

..but the mods left the insult up for all to see.

But I'd rather spend that £150 on BD's than another player at this point in time. Plus Crysis comes out soon so a new GC may be on the cards. Thank god Crysis isn't Mac exclusive.

Unfortunately splitting the forums up would serve no useful purpose. Fanboys from either side would still feel the need to jump on whatever thread with their biased snipey comments.

It's sad that adults (which I assume most of us are) can't have a decent discussion without having to chuck in some complete crap from nowhere or some completely unsubstantiated comment which only serves to make the other side angry and retaliate in kind.

The HD Movies forum has only got like this in the last few months, it used to be fine. Hopefully with the more stringent policy on this particular forum, the fanboys will hopefully think twice when they post a reply. We have already seen a few of the worst culprits have temporary bans, so perhaps things may be sinking in.

I would rather not have to keep closing threads.

I use to be a Mod on Avforums and use to delete peoples posts but keep the threads open. It's hard to have an opinion about modding without it look like I'm critisizing so I guess I'll stop here....:rotfl:

Can we not have a dedicated, all singing, all dancing, troll as much as you like thread? Where people can come, moan, goad until their hearts content?

All the PIFFLE gets kept to one thread and people get to vent their little socks off!

Thats what we use to have, I went to Iluvbluray.com for a while and when I returned it was locked!

It was when the dust settled, the fun realy began and threads were getting locked left right and center.

But compare the forum now to what it was like 2 months ago...much nicer place now so I think it was a wise decision personally.

I think the Mod's should delete posts and warn people rather than locking threads. Afterall even if a thread is locked it stills is up and available for everyone to see.

Maybe any format war thread should be allowed to run for a day or two then closed as it will almost certainly have drifted from the original topic by then.

    Let everyone cool off.

These days people are just cuter with their comments waiting for someone to bite.

Sometimes it's just better to have and open slanging match (in a dedicated thread).

Eh? Crysis is a PC-only game due in November. Ideally a PC running Vista if you want DX10, XP runs it on DX9.
