I hope i'm not breaking any rules here, but theres a petition going to try and stop companies (mainly Alliance Atlantis) from making reversible sleeves with both languages both sides.

    http://www.petitiononline.com/bay5/petition.html

Thought/hoped some of you may be interested.

I had a look at the petition out of curiosity and quote the final sentence below :-

We WILL NOT spend our money purchasing any DVDs that have multi-lingual covers.

In my very humble opinion this is taking nerdyism to a new level.

Nobody is forced to buy Canadian DVDs as they always have the option of buying a more expensive region 2 version six months later at Sainsbury which probably won't have French writing on the cover.

Why not cover all DVDs with brown paper which will make them look uniform.

    I for one can sympathise...

The first time I came upon one such cover, I had such a hard time. I couldn't figure out whether I was supposed to read the French, or the English, or both - both one before the other, or both at the same time.

In the end I read only the English, as I was unable to simply will myself to understand French, even after a few drinks (which usually does the trick). This leaves an empty void in my soul, because I know that if only I had read the French side, I would now know the meaning of life, my purpose in this existence, whether aliens really were visiting us from outer space, who really shot Kennedy, the exact location of Bin Laden (currently thought by many French people to have opened up an ice cream stall with Elvis in Nice), and exactly what McDonalds put in their beef burgers. :(

Also, the French language is just so ugly to look at, and I can't watch any movie without being distracted by all those silly French letters and sentences on the sleeves.

In fact, a petition to ban the French language should solve this problem once and for all.

So let me get this straight:

You order a pair of jeans they arrive in the wrong colour. Nevermind.

Book tickets to see [insert favourite band here], get there and find S Club 7 playing. Tough titty.

Order Pepporoni Pizza, delivery boy gives you cold, stale garlic bread. Hard Luck, Would be stupid to moan about it.

All those people saying get a life, you don't take pride in your collection?. Would you rather the films just come loose in an envelope??

The one thing i collect is DVDs and yes i do get ****ed that they come with a cover i was not expecting. Am i asking for too much??.

    Christ.

    Robz,

Put like that .... I don't agree with you.

The transfer, features and audio are much more important that cover artwork.

    In other words,

You order a pair of jeans and the wrapping is in more than one language. Nevermind.

Book tickets to see [insert favourite band here], and discover that the tickets are larger than you expected and don't have a hologram on them. Tough titty.

Order Pepporoni (sp) Pizza, delivery boy gives you a pizza box which has pizza in several languages i.e.

    Pizza (French)
    Pizza (Spanish)
    Pizza (Italian)
    Pizza (Celtic)
    Pizza (Basque)
    Pizza (Geman)

    Buddha

Perhaps other forum members have other priorities. Chill out.:p

    :D

No but the principle is the same. You order something you expect to get what you ordered. I agree about picture, audio, extras blah, blah but we're talking about covers here.

You're telling me if you ordered, purely as an example, Evil Dead Book of the Dead and it had French writing on the rubber case you wouldn't be slightley miffed?

I'm chilled ;) i just don't understand how some people can be so blase over some stuff.

    Allah :D

Robz, the reason that I don't care so much is that I buy films to enjoy the movie and the extras. If it was a choice between a brown envelope and a nice sturdy case, then yes, the case would win every time. I have a collection of over 300 and the reason I buy from Canada is that I can save myself a few pounds a time and over a large number of films, it really makes a difference, as I do not have a bottomless pit of income. The point is, as was mentioned before, that there is a choice. You can buy US copies, or even region 2 and avoid the French language on the cover. If however you want to choose to buy the cheaper Canadian, which is a territory where English and French are both commonly spoken languages, then you surely can't complain.

Of course, if the films you buy are not Canadian or French in origin, then I will shut up.

Trouble is a lot of importers are supplying the Canadian versions over the US ones. I think MovieTyme are trying to get around this.

Yes, obviously if you want to buy Canadian then there's nothing to moan about but if you order a US title, like i did with Spy Game, and get a ridiculous hybrid cover then the derision begins.

I couldn't give a **** if they came delivered in the rotting corpse of my next door neighbour, so long as the disc is in good nick, and does what it's supposed to.

I'm not buying a box. I'm buying media. Bugger the packaging.

I agree 100% with Robz - my collection of over 250 DVDs has cost me a fortune over the years and it is a COLLECTION. I'm proud of of the DVDs I've amassed and the way they look does matter to me, and has done ever since I collected VHS tapes.

Cover art is important, call me sad or whatever, but I look forward to seeing what the latest releases are going to look like and I know alot of people out there feel excatly the same way. Sure the picture and sound quality are most important but isn't it all about the whole package?! I find it hard to believe some peple pay out £16-£18 a time and don't give a sh*t how the things look.....

1200+ posts on an AV forum , you sound like you know what you're talking about. Can you honestly say you don't care about any covers you have in your collection?.

You must have a favourite, one that adds that extra something to a film you love?.

I can't believe you hold the art/covers in such disregard.

Couldn't care less. Most of my CD's are kept in CD wallets. The boxes either go up the loft, in the garage or occasionally in the bin. It's about time I invested in some more for my DVD's. Art work is great, but I don't think I'll be framing and hanging any of my inserts any time soon.
