Can you upgrade the hard drive in these things? if so is it easily done? and if not is there a better alternative?

I have put in a Seagate 7200 120GB hard drive, not as easy as I thought but it works well.
The HDD holder needs a little tweaking to free it from the unit, I loosened the front panel but watch out for the display ribbon connector and the drive cables are fiddly to get to.

cool, so its basically a direct but tricky replacement? no software/firmware updates needed?
