This is the problem with EV ownership

To say I am fuming is an understatement

Vicky took the Zoe to London to visit fiends last night on way back today slow and high power use due to weather

She made it to Newport Pagnell Services with just 3% power left

Only to find a rental truck dumped across the entire charging bay

Services staff no help said it’s bad weather so people are parking everywhere and they won’t Tannoy for driver or ticket it for blocking a clearly signed bay.

Just told her tough if stuck call a recovery trucK

How do the expect general drivers to take up EVs when this is the attitude at places that motorists rely on

The driver came back after 45mins so she is on charge now

Then the service station staff informed her if she stays on site over 2 hours will get a fine as it’s a 2 hour max time at services. So she is getting a top up and then going to try again at Leicester services on way home.

Just hoping weather does not close in too much before she gets home

Could it be worth contacting Ecotricity with those pictures and the full story? I'd hope that they would have some say with the service station owners to prevent this happening for other users in the future.

should have called the police, it must surely be an offence to block the charging point.

    There's a ruddy great sign saying it's a £100 fine, pity it wasn't applied...

Problem is I think in the current weather they have more important things to be dealing with
She mentioned this to the staff on site who said it’s not their sign was out there by Ecotricity and there is nothing legally they can do to enforce it

Just hoping she hasn’t over estimated.

Findmymrs shows her near Nottingham. And the remaining charge

Yes AFAIk Ecotricity pay the service areas for exclusive use of the spaces where the chargers are located. Not sure exactly how it works I assume they must have some sort of lease on the spaces

@PRESSTOG Gald she made it home!!! I remeber one trip back in the first winter with the Leaf when I encountered something similar, but didnt have time to wait so had to divert to find my wife at work and take her car for the trip :(.

Sadly the problem of blocked EV chargers is never going to go away, just like people who park in disabled places with no badge, double park regardless of yellow lines etc.

Longer range EV and more charge points in the only solution.

I may have, in the past, attached a towing rope and left such a vehicle where it is blocking all traffic. Funny how the staff of a site then all of a sudden do get into action...And the weather is no excuse, there are idiots everywhere. The amount of times I see people just leaving there cars where ever because they are in a rush...Glad she got home ok...

no point in having penalty notices though if they are not enforced.

I did wonder whether the sign's symbol of a CCTV camera means there will be a ticket winging it's way to the Rental Company in the post, can but hope.

I think the real reason the public shun EVs is because of the current inconvenience.

This journey in an ICE car would have been stress-free and a lot quicker.

However, people who block charging points need to be executed, it's so inconsiderate.:nono:

the way the world is today im surprised people were not worried about a rental van being left there as it could have had a bomb in it for all we knew.

i agree, im just saying people shouldn't leave a rental blocking a bay with the way things are today.

would be funny if he came back and it was towed away.

It's a shame the charging cable didn't reach all the way around the van. If I could have, I'd have blocked the van in and charged the car from a distance. Then only left once ready, regardless of whether the van driver needed to be away.

I was thinking pretty much the same. Are there extension leads available for public charging EVs? Or has h&s ruled that out incase some moron hurts themselves?

I’d have told them to stuff their 2 hour limit and charged as long as I needed to.

Once you are in the Ecotricity space, legitimately, it's not the Service Stations territory.

That is interesting view on it - in my experience they measure it based upon their entry and exit cameras of the site. I actually won my appeal as the signage of the limits wasn't good enough. I had my dashcam running so I was able to show them what I see when I entered and parked up. I shared that with them and they agreed with my point of view :)

I am seriously considering a leaf for my next car and as such tend look at all the public chargers as I pass.

But I must say I was disappointed today. A busy town/village local to me has a kerbside charging point which is thoughtfully left empty by the ICE vehicles. But today someone in a Leaf of all things had parked completely blocking it, cable not attached to the car.

If some EV owners have this attitude, how bad is it going to get once the general public start buying en masse?

That is disturbing, they are charging points not priority parking.
