If i splash out on a pricey scart cable, but have to connect multiple devices via a switcher, am i defeating the object of paying for a pricey scart cable in the first place?

any help would be great

With a very pricey scart lead I would say yes but it's probably worth spending a few quid on a more upmarket lead to help eliminate cross-talk and interference. Robert Dyas do a very good Philex scart (in the "Home Cinema" range) for about £7 that would fit the bill nicely. :)
